The mission of the TPSS Special Education Department is to serve as the voice, advocate, and visionary for our students, ages 3-21,
with special and unique needs… to improve through the excellence of identification, evaluation, service, and training… the supports that are needed for each child to achieve his or her potential level of education in order to promote independence and productivity after graduation.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 15% (15.4 million) of U.S. children aged 6 to 14 are considered to have disabilities. Numbers for ages 15 and above are slightly higher.
There are 6,612,752 children and students ages 3 to 21 served under IDEA, Part B in the 50 states and the District of Columbia.
There are more than twice as many males served as females.
Louisiana’s special education population makes up 12 percent of public school enrollment.
