Sept. 3 On September 3, 1838, a slave named Frederick Douglass escaped to freedom. He dressed as a sailor and boarded a train in Baltimore, Maryland. He rode to Wilmington, Delaware where he caught a steamboat to the free city of Philadelphia and then went on to New York City.
