    FIT 5 STUDENT CHALLENGE

    Dear Parents,

Hammond Westside is so excited to bring a great event to our school that will encourage your child to achieve his/her personal fitness goals through physical activity, nutrition, and hydration education! Special Olympics Louisiana (SOLA) awarded our school with $5,000 as a way to acknowledge our inclusive efforts to educate all of our children about overall health and wellness. These funds will be used for Special Education/Special Olympics events and needs in the future.

Upon returning from Easter Break on Monday, April 12th, our PE and Adapted PE departments will spend that week (except for the virtual day on Wed. the 14th) teaching all students on the upper and lower about achieving their FIT 5 goals through exercise, eating healthily, and drinking plenty of water. We know this has been a tough year with quarantine and virtual situations and it is hard to find that energy to maintain a good and healthy routine under those circumstances. This program is a wonderful way to correct those unhealthy habits and get the kids charged up for a healthy lifestyle this summer!

The FIT 5 lessons will be available on our Schools website tangischools.org/hwms, the school’s Facebook’s page, and on your child’s digital workplan on Monday, April 12th, so the whole family can see what your child is learning and hopefully incorporate the same healthy principles together. The week after we teach the FIT 5 lessons, your child will bring home a FIT 5 Fitness Tracker Chart to use that second week to chart their efforts with fitness, exercise, and hydration. This tracker chart will be turned in to their PE teacher on Monday-Tuesday, April 26th-27th, and those that complete their FIT 5 Chart will receive a certificate and a fun treat J Please help us hype this up for the kids!! They will be so proud of themselves, feel like a million bucks, and hopefully make this healthy lifestyle a “lifelong” thing J

    Sincerely,

The PE & Adapted PE Dept.
