The faculty of Hammond Westside Montessori participated in a teacher led professional development titled “Simulation Society” in preparation for the students returning to school on August 6th. The faculty arranged themselves in three groups which, unbeknownst to them, represented different economic levels in society. They were given different amounts of money and treated differently by the sheriff, the mayor, and the city hall manager. Their task was to select a Town Council Representative and build their city. Throughout the simulation, the poorest group experienced a decrease in their land and being arrested for behavior overlooked in other groups, while the wealthiest group experienced increases in land, extra money, and special privileges. Although there was an abundance of laughter and fun throughout the simulation, it concluded with a very serious and rich discussion about the effects of poverty in our society and how we sometimes approach or view people differently even if unintentional. Overall, the faculty found the simulation to be a valuable, eye-opening, and life-changing experience.Group 1Group 2Group 3HWEMS is starting a First Lego League Robotics team this year.
