The following Qualifications are required to apply for the program:

• Individuals who possess a non-education bachelor’s degree as verified by an official transcript.

• Passing score(s) on Praxis content knowledge test(s) that align with your area of certification.
• PreK-3, Elementary 1-5 , and all mild/moderate certifications require the Teaching Reading Exam, in additon to content knowledge tests referenced in bullet 2.

PROGRAM COSTS

• Tuition for this program is $4,500.  However, there is no out of pocket expense as long as the teacher candidate teaches in Tangipahoa Parish for three years.
• Teacher candidates who only complete one year will be charged $3,000 for the program.
• Teacher candidates who only complete two years will be charge $2,000 for the program.
• Praxis exam fees vary and are the responsibility of the teacher candidate.
• Application fee and criminal backgroung check fees as required by LDOE.

PROGRAM PHASES

Phase 1 – Application
Phase 2 – Direct Contact Hours

• The summer training sessions cover a variety of topics including but not limited to the following:

  • Classroom Management

  • Foundations of Special Education

  • IEP Mandates

  • Teaching and Learning Methods

  • Pre-K Classroom Focused Instruction
  • Diverse Learners
  • Standards-Based Lesson Planning
  • Child and Adolescent Psychology

  • Foundational Reading and Literacy

  • Teaching Students with Dyslexia

• 135 – 180 training hours
• 17 (regular education) or 23 (special education) 8 hour days
• A calendar of trainings will be provided upon acceptance to the program
• Teacher candidates must attend EVERY day of training

Phase 3 – Internship

• The teacher candidate will teach the school year immediately following the successful completion of all summer training sessions.  It is the teacher candidate’s responsibility to secure a teaching position in a Tangipahoa Parish school

• The internship must be completed in the certification area for which the candidate has passed the Praxis content knowledge exam

• The teacher candidate will be assigned a mentor who will mentor the candidate 5 hours per week

• Formal evaluations will be completed by the school based administration and the district based coordinator

• Saturday seminars will take place during the internship year

• The teacher candidate must pass the Praxis PLT and Praxis Teaching Reading (PreK - 3rd and Elementary 1st-5th teachers) during the internship year
