Work Permit for High School Students

How to Obtain Your Student Work Permit

If you are a high school student under the age of 18 and have secured a job, you must obtain an official Work Permit (also known as an "Intent to Employ" form). You cannot legally begin working until your employer has the completed permit. Your school front office can provide you with a copy of this form.

The 3-Step Process

1. Secure the Form and Get Signatures:

  • First, get a job offer. You must have an employer ready to hire you before applying.

  • Obtain the Work Permit application form (available in the Counseling/Main Office of your school).

  • Have your employer complete and sign their section of the form.

  • Have your parent or legal guardian sign the designated section.

2. Submit to the School:

  • Bring the completed form, along with proof of your age (e.g., birth certificate or state ID), to your high school's designated issuing officer (usually in the Counseling or Main Office).

  • The school will review your form and check your academic standing, as you must maintain satisfactory grades and attendance to be eligible.

3. Receive and Deliver the Permit:

  • Allow a few business days for the school to process the permit.

  • Pick up the final, signed permit and personally deliver it to your employer.

  • You may only begin working after the employer has the valid Work Permit.

    Important Things to Know

  • Renewal is Required: Work permits expire and must be renewed every school year or whenever you change employers.

  • Academic Requirements: Failure to maintain a minimum GPA or consistent attendance may result in your Work Permit being revoked or denied.

  • Age and Hour Restrictions: The permit will list the maximum number of hours and the times you are legally allowed to work while school is in session, based on your age.

  • Summer Hours: If the high school offices are closed during summer break, work permits are typically processed at the District's Central Office. Our offices are CLOSED on Fridays during our summer months.
