Announcing Star Academy!

The 7th and 8th grade students of Amite Westside Middle School are moving into the spotlight with a unique opportunity on the horizon.

PRESS RELEASE

April 28, 2022

It is with great excitement that we announce the opening of a Star Academy at Amite Westside Middle Magnet School this fall (2022). This will consist of 5 classrooms in a wing converted to a special design that is part of a nationally recognized program for addressing individualized student needs. We were fortunate in Tangipahoa Parish to be granted funding by  Governor Edwards to contract  with Star Academy for the next three years. We are honored to have the support for our school district and the opportunity to provide this national program to our students.

Star Academy is an all-encompassing, all-inclusive intervention program. The program engages even the most discouraged students. Star Academy is a research-backed, educator-built model that was strategically developed to address the following objectives:

  • Reducing Drop-Out Rates

  • Acknowledging & Addressing At-Risk Student Needs

  • Infusing Personal Responsibility into Formal Curriculum

This program is designed to engage hard to reach students, meet the standards of state testing, and increase on track graduation rates. This is a full-immersion PBL core curriculum where students learn by engaging in hands-on STEM projects. 95% of the school districts who partner with Star Academy see an improvement in standardized test scores; as well as, a decrease in absenteeism and discipline referrals.

During our pilot year (2022-23) students from Amite Westside Middle Magnet will participate; however, in the future we hope to expand and open this opportunity up to struggling students in 7th and 8th grade across our district.
