Problem of the day with Educreations- You will find the Problem of the Day located in Blackboard. Use your iPad and the app "Educreations" to complete the problem. Click "done" upon completion.  Title the project "Day 2 POD - last name", for example "Day 2 POD - rocquin."  Type the problem as part of the description.  Set the lesson as "private."  Choose "mathematics" as the subject area.  Choose "Measurement" as the sub-category.  Select "save."  When the lesson is in your Lesson Library, post the link in Blackboard.

The area of a triangle can be found by multiplying the base by 1/2 of the height. Find the area of a triangle with a height of 20 cm and a width of 5 cm. Show all of your steps.

Mathematical Practices
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
4. Model with mathematics.

Digit Place -Students will learn the concept that each digit has its own unique place within the whole number. We will play this every day. The more you play the better you get.
Innovative Classroom Is the website where the directions for Digit Place were found. You will find some amazing things there. Take the time to check it out.

"Math"gizers - From time to time we need to take a break. Our brain is full and we need to get the blood flowing to our brain again so we can think. "Math"gizers are just like Energizers except we put a math twist to it. Get ready to stretch!

 Math Playground

In the lab are four stations with Math Activities for you to complete. You will rotate through the computer station, iPad station, SMART Board station, and Printables station to complete the activities. The activities in each station will showcase tools and ideas that can be used in your own classroom.

iPad Project - Measurement:  Use the iPad and the app Aviary to create a picture problem.  Use the camera on the device to snap a shot of something in the classroom, or outside.  Pull the picture into Aviary.  Edit the picture, add embellishments and apply enhancements.  Create a word problem by adding text to the picture.  When clicking "Done," the image will automatically save to your camera roll.  Navigate to Blackboard from the iPad and post your picture in the Discussion Board for Day 2.

Estimation Station - Every morning there will be a container in the front of the classroom filled with items. Write your estimate on the sheet of paper located by the container. At the end of the day 2 people will be responsible for counting the items and telling the class the result.

Mathematical Practices
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.

Pictures with Problems - Let's mesh writing, math and digital photography. Math is all around us. Look through your digital pictures at home or take some new pictures. What type of Math skills can you see in them. Do you see patterns? Do you see shapes? Higher order questions are all around us. Let's use digital pictures to create a poem, story, or questions that make you think mathematically.

Problem Pictures The 184 full-color photographs in Mathematical World stimulate curiosity and challenge students to reflect on the mathematics at work in the world around them. A related word problem accompanies each of these striking photos and invites students to think through the exciting mathematical challenges the photographs present. Depicting a wide range of intriguing everyday objects, historical artifacts, and patterns in the natural world, the images promote visual and spatial reasoning, interest in the history of mathematics, and problem-solving skills and also encourage students to explore mathematics in their own world.

Student Response  - http://www.socrative.com/

Socrative lets teachers engage and assess their students with educational activities on tablets, laptops and smartphones. Through the use of real time questioning, instant result aggregation and visualization, teachers can gauge the whole class’ current level of understanding. Socrative saves teachers time so the class can further collaborate, discuss, extend and grow as a community of learners.

Power Hour with SMART - Calendar, Math Tools, and Widgets, oh my!  Let's power up with some amazing tools offered through SMART!

Today we will continue to build your SMART Notebook Math Lesson file to be used in your class curriculum.

Website of the Day - https://www.khanacademy.org/
"Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content."

We will explore Khan academy for content, participate in practice exercises, and work to set up classes in the program.

Measurement Booklet Inserts

You will need to print two slides. One slide has the full illustration and the other is half of the same illustration. Type the title of your story on the front cover before printing. After you print them, cut across the middle of the half illustration. This will be your front cover. The full illustration is your back cover. Staple the front cover and the story pages to the back cover. You are ready to write your story or poem.
