Electronic Chalkboard - We will begin each morning with our Nearpod agenda. Nearpod is online presentation software with an interactive twist!

Icebreaker: Getting to Know You Fractions Let's get to know each other with Fractions. Use the direction sheet to complete your "About Me Circle" using markers or crayons.  The teacher will start the music and you will roam the classroom exchanging circles with your classmates. When the music stops, return to your seat with the circle you have at that time. When it is your turn you will introduce that person to the class.

Problem of the Day Today we will work together to explore the app Educreations.  We will use this app to complete our daily Problem of the Day.  You will first create an account and become familiar with the community of Educreations.  Next, we will create a lesson to explain how to solve the problem of the day.  Using the iPad, we will paste a link to your lesson in the discussion board of Blackboard.

Use the app Educreations to solve the following math problem.  Post the link to your educreations lesson in our Blackboard discussion board.
Greg and Steve bought a large pizza to share.
Greg ate 5/8 of the pizza.
What fraction of the pizza was left for Steve?

Mathematical Practices
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
4. Model with mathematics.

"Math"gizers - From time to time we need to take a break. Our brain is full and we need to get the blood flowing to our brain again so we can think. "Math"gizers are just like Energizers except we put a math twist to it.

Snowball
Three Ball Pass

Digit Place -Students will learn the concept that each digit has its own unique place within the whole number. We will play this every day. The more you play the better you get.

Innovative Classroom Is the website where the directions for Digit Place were found. You will find some amazing things there. Take the time to check it out.

 Math Playground

In the lab are four stations with Math Activities for you to complete. You will rotate through the computer station, iPad station, SMART Board station, and Printables station to complete the activities. The activities in each station will showcase tools and ideas that can be used in your own classroom.

GoSoapBox is a web-based clicker tool used by educators around the world to keep students engaged and gain real-time insight into student comprehension.

Website of the Day - www.ck12.org
Create classes, assign practice, and track performance. CK-12 Foundation provides a library of free online textbooks, videos, exercises, flashcards, and real world applications for over 5000 math concepts.

Estimation Station - Every morning you will have an estimation activity. At the end of the day 2 people will be responsible for counting the items and telling the class the results.

Estimating Jars (PDF)

Today's estimation is "A Burst of Fractions".  Write your estimation of the number of Starbursts on the back of a sticky note, put your name on the front and then stick it on the poster. We will use the Selector Tool to select two people to count the starburst and give us the results. Those two people will also tell us the fraction of each color of Starburst.

Mathematical Practices
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.

PowerHour with SMART - Calendar, Math Tools, and Widgets, oh my!  Let's power up with some amazing tools offered through SMART! SMART offers great tutorials for learning how to use the Math Tools software. Click Here to view the tutorials.

We will work together in class each day to build a Notebook File to be used in your Math curriculum.  We will start with a Title Page, add some content pages, a few activities, and finish up with widgits, tools, and an activity builder. A rubric will be provided to ensure that our lessons are a complete package.
• SMART Widgits
• Activity Templates
• Title Pages
• Activity Builder
• Math Tools
SMART Calendar - The best way to teach the calendar to students is to give them their own calendar. Age appropriate students can mark special events on their calendar while younger students can circle, draw, and color in parts of the calendar. Here you will find things to do with your classroom calendar.

Blank Calendars from ABC Teach

About Today's Date This website contains fascinating facts about each day of the year from a mathematics perspective. It can be used to enhance your class's daily calendar work.

Blank Everyday Calendar (Notebook) Let's use the Smart Board to complete some calendar activities. Remember to rename it before beginning to use it that way you'll have your blank Notebook file from year to year.

SMARTBoard Activity - The SMART Board re-energizes students as well as teachers. You will get lots of ideas on how to use this valuable tool in your classroom to teach math.
Here are some Notebook files that you can use when you focus on Fractions.

Integration of Knowledge and Ideas
7. Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse media and formats, including visually and quantitatively, as
well as in words.

Mental Math Mode with Padlet - You will need to think hard and the only tool you can use is your brain. You will use Padlet, an online collaboration board, to submit your answers. Using the iPad, scan the QR Code located on the bulletin board in the lab and post your solution to the board.

Beanie Babies If you collect Beanie Babies, see if you can "Figure This".

iPad Project - Fractions -use Animoto to create an equivalent fractions video.  You can use Animoto from the web, or complete the project entirely on the iPad.  Post your project in the discussion board of our Blackboard class.

Software - Kidspiration 3 The new Kidspiration 3 helps to develop literacy and numeracy skills. Each day we will use this program to develop  a specific skill. I think you'll find it is more than just for writing. It it builds conceptual understanding in Math.

Integration of Knowledge and Ideas
7. Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse media and formats, including visually and quantitatively, as
well as in words.

Numbered Heads Together - The Numbered Heads Together software turns any set of questions into a fun, interactive learning game for the entire class. Click here to order the software.

Make it, Take it - As students explore the concept of fractions, it is important for them to be able to handle concrete materials so they can compare and identify fractional parts.

I Have... Who Has... Need a fun what to get students up out of their desks? Play "I Have... Who Has..." This activity will keep your students attention as well as keep them thinking.

Sum Calculator Fun - Calculators are a type of computer. Students are motivated by them. Let's use calculators to make old games new again.
Tic-Tac-Toe - Let's play this fun game using the SMART Board or PowerPoint. It brings a whole new meaning to learning.
Mathematical Practices
5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
Mnemonic: A device, such as a formula or rhyme, used as an aid in remembering.
