Champ Cooper librarian, Kelley Cook, went all out to capture the essence of a 50's diner with an "All You Can Read" theme at their recent Scholastic Book Fair!  Mrs. Cook even dressed the part in a poodle skirt every day and a Pink Ladies Jacket for Friday!  Everyone was so excited about the book fair this year with fly off the shelf titles like Ruined, Smile, Dinosaurs Love Underpants, Taylor Swift Her Song, Dirty Jobs, Phineas & Ferb Laughapalooza Joke Book, The Lightning Thief, NERDS, 39 CluesDiary of a Wimpy Kid, and many many more!  Thanks to all the students who helped with the decorations, the parents who helped run the fair, and the readers who make it all worth while!

Students in Ms. Cowell's Pre-K class at O.W. Dillon Elementary finished off a week of Dr. Seuss with green eggs and ham. A great time was had by all!

Loretta Hill's students at Hammond Westside Upper were very excited about creating various geometric shapes with household items to reinforce skills for the upcoming LEAP Test.

In celebration of Youth Art Month, several of Amite Elementary School's students had their works of art displayed at the Tangipahoa Parish School Board Office. Art teacher, Amanda King has introduced the children to a variety of forms of art. She highlights a different artist each week and shows the boys and girls samples of their styles through an array of media.

Hammond Eastside Primary School eagerly celebrated the "Great Louisiana Read-In" on Monday, Feb. 8th during Louisiana Literacy Week. From 10:00--10:10 a.m., all students read their favorite books with partners. Many students wanted to continue for more than 10 minutes, because they were having so much fun sharing their books.

Governor Bobby Jindal proclaimed this week, February 8-12, 2010, as “Literacy Week” in Louisiana. Independence Elementary is celebrating by participating in “The Great Louisiana Read-In,” a 10-minute period of silent reading, and guest readers have been invited to the school to help promote Literacy Week. On Wednesday, February 10th, Mrs. Cathy LeBlanc, principal of I.E.S. read the story There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Shell to the entire student body. The book was projected on a screen so that all students were able to see the illustrations. Students learned new vocabulary words and were encouraged to check out other versions of the book from the school library. Pictured above are Lisa Genco's second grade students with Principal Cathy LeBlanc.

Governor Bobby Jindal has proclaimed February 8-12, 2010 as “Literacy Week” in Louisiana and has declared today, Monday, February 8 “Literacy Day.”

Amite Elementary School Assistant Principal, Dana Topps and Administrative Assistant, Carmen Brabham read to Mrs. Kathy Schilling's kindergarten class at Amite Elementary School on Thursday, February 11.

Mrs. Dana Topps read her son's favorite book, Green Eggs And Ham. Mrs. Carmen Brabham read, Why Alligators Hate Dogs by JJ Reneaux, because she has always liked alligators. The children loved both of the stories and would like to invite both ladies to read to them again.

Bridget Acosta's and Stacey Lawson's classes at Vinyard Elementary read a biography about a famous person and created a visual using a Coke bottle. Students gave presentations during their reading classes after researching and finding the answers to the following questions:

  • Birth date and birthplace

  • The most notable thing this person is famous for

  • Occupation

  • How has the world benefited from him/her

  • Other interesting facts

  • Why did you choose this person?

  • How were you inspired by him/her?
The students all had a wonderful time presenting, researching, and creating their Biography Bottles.

3rd Grade Art Classes at DC Reeves Elementary, under the direction of Art Teacher Bria Richardson, just recently finished learning about the artist Pablo Picasso. The students learned that Picasso became famous because he didn’t paint just like everyone else, he was different. So, the students created unique faces. Faces that have many different colors and that don’t have the eyes, nose, mouth and ears in the correct place, just as Picasso had done. Upon completion of this, the students were able to pose for a picture with their classroom teacher, but the teacher had to hold a copy of one of Picasso's paintings, "The Portrait of Marie-Therese". In this portrait there is a spot for the teacher to become part of the picture, by placing her head as the new focus of the portrait. All of the third graders were able to express their creativity and make something new, but they especially like seeing their teacher in such a silly picture!

Margaret Milazzo's third graders from Natalbany Elementary made a trip to the T3 Lab at C.M. Fagan for the very first Video Conference in Tangipahoa Parish School System. Colette Taillon, Instructional Technology Facilitator, organized the video conference for Constitution Day with a Museum in Ohio. Students received a forty-five minute lesson on the Constitution, participated in hands-on activities and communicated live with the "teacher" in Ohio.  Each school in TPSS is in the process of receiving Video Conferencing equipment thanks to Deborah Forshag, Director of Federal Programs.
