Two vehicles lay in a mess of mangled steel. First, the police arrive; then, the firemen, followed by ambulances. At last, the hearse makes its appearance.
Luckily, everyone walked out well. This was all a demonstration to the students of what happens when you drink and drive. We were all read a poem about one who left their life behind for one more drink before hopping behind the wheel, and we were visited by several guest speakers. Among the speakers were District Attorney, Scott Perrilloux, State Trooper, Paul Oulliber, MADDs Jacob Neal, Coronor, Rick Foster, and Fire Chief, Bruce Cuter.
While only a mock crash, it brought out real emotion from those who have known people who have passed in car accidents. This demonstration was in memory of six Sumner students of whom we mourn the passing. Nicholas Sanders, Wesley McIntyre, Logan Hargis, Don Fedele, Chris Coon, and Josh Lampton are still missed greatly, as shown by the measures taken to prevent losing anyone else.
We were provided with all of the vehicles necessary for the demonstration and would like to thank all parties involved. The volunteer fire department even had a few of Sumner High School’s own students. But none of this could be done without the cast and crew behind this valuable lesson, Brother Danny and Mrs. Christy Forrest, Lauri Girgenti, Brother Danny Smith, PTSA, Project S.T.E.P. student advisory team, Morgan Shockley, Lance Dykes, Shelly Verberne, Sarah Girgenti, Kevin McDaniel, Ethan Givens, Jake Latner, Nicole Leblanc, and Cody Stevens. Thanks also goes to the Amite Fire Department and Chief Bruce Cuter, Kentwood Fire Department, Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Department, Acadian Ambulance, State Trooper Paul Oulliber and Troop L., Dr. Rick Foster and the Coronoer's Office, Jacob Neal and MADD, McKneely's Funeral Home, Coon's Auto Salvage and Wrecker Service, Kentwood Spring Water, Kentwood Co-Op, and Vivid Video Production.
Two grants provided funding through the Lieutenant Governor’s Office and The Brown Foundation of New Orleans. Writers of the grants were Mrs. Angela Shockley, Mrs. Lisa Piner, and Mrs. Lesley Bridges.
