HOMEWORK, TESTS, AND GRADES

  1. Homework  assignments will be checked.
  2. Vocabulary tests, chapter tests, and unit tests will always be announced in advance.
  3. Unannounced quizzes may be given from time to time.
  4. The grading scale will follow the scale in the Tangipahoa Parish Handbook.
  5. Students are required to maintain an assignment calendar that lists all assignments and work done in class.
  6. Students are required to record their grades on grade record sheets and keep a running average of their grades.
  7. Maintaining these sheets eliminates surprises when interims are handed out.

LATE HOMEWORK

  1. Assignments are due at the beginning of class.
  2. Students should have final copy and rough drafts together and in a portfolio before entering class.
  3. A penalty of 25% is deducted per class period the assignment is late.
  4. Do not use class time to complete the assignment because it still will receive the same penalty as turning it in at the beginning of the next class period.
  5. Do not put any late work on my desk or in my hands.  Place the assignment in the designated slot before class begins.
  6. Projects-All projects are given adequate time for completion.  All projects are due on the assigned date.

MAKE-UP WORK

  1. Students who are absent are responsible for any work missed.
  2. An excused absence allows students to make up the work missed; it does NOT excuse student from assignments.
  3. Students who do not make up their work will receive a zero for that assignment.
  4. Students must make an appointment with the teacher to take any test he or she missed.  The students have a maximum of three days to make up any test upon returning to school.
  5. To find out what students have missed in class when they are absent, they should check out these sources:
  1. Make-up work calendar that has a list of all assignments and handouts done each day.
  2. Another student's calendar (in the student's binder) that lists all assignments
  3. A class buddy that helps with handouts and assignments

***Students should not ask teacher for assignments until they have checked all of the above areas first. 

ENTERING AND LEAVING THE CLASSROOM

  1. Students should enter the classroom quietly (with all materials) and be in their desks by the time the tardy bell finishes ringing.  As they sit down, they should immediately look for bell work, get out appropriate materials, and begin work Bell work will be numbered consecutively. Teacher will periodically give a bell work grade .
  2. Students who are absent are expected to make up bell work without being reminded by the teacher.
  3. Students who need to see the teacher (admit slip, money, etc.) should do so during this bell work time.
  4. Students will complete bell work and remain quiet until teacher begins with discussion.
  5. As the class comes to a close and the teacher has given her final remarks, ALL STUDENTS should straighten their desks into appropriate rows, collect any trash, and empty trash into trash can as they leave the room.  They should not get up during class to throw away trash.
  6. Students should remain sitting in their desks when the bell rings and wait for the teacher to dismiss them.
  7. Should a student enter the class late or have to leave during class time, he or she will sign the log sheet that is found in the front of the room. 

CARE OF CLASSROOM

  1. Students should not sit on top of the desk.
  2. Students in English classes are not allowed in the area of the room where computers are.  These are used STRICTLY for publication class.
  3. Students should not write or mark on or in any other way mark on desks.
  4. Students should not chew gum or eat food in classroom.  Do not bring drinks into the classroom.

TURNING IN HOMEWORK AND TESTS

  1. Students will pass their papers to the person on their left or right depending on which side of the room they sit. 
  2. Students on the last row will pass the papers to the front of the row.
  3. The two students in the front row on each side of the room will collect all papers, staple or clip them, and place them in the designated area.
  4. When students are taking tests and turning them in individually, they may take them to the front of the room and give them to the teacher as soon as they finish.  However, they should return to their desks and REMAIN QUIET UNTIL ALL TESTS HAVE BEEN TURNED IN.  Failure to do so will result in loss of points on that given test!

WHEN THE TEACHER IS ABSENT OR OUT OF THE ROOM

  1. When the teacher is absent, she will always leave an assignment.  It will NOT BE "BUSY WORK."  Students are expected to follow directions and complete the assignments.
  2. Students are to follow classroom procedures and rules.  The substitute teacher will have a list of these.
  3. Students who break the rules, do not follow the procedure, or in any other way cause problems for the substitute will be disciplined by the teacher on her return.  The substitute teacher also has the right to disciplined and to write office referrals.
  4. If the teacher is at school but is being delayed in getting to class, students are expected to begin class without her.(**This means working on bell work, reading the day's assignment from the board, and turning to that assignment and attempting it.)
