Course Description

This course is designed to prepare students as support staff in a business sector. Emphasis is placed on the integration of business and communication concepts and skills necessary to prepare students to become members of the workforce. Oral and written communications, time management, decision-making, interpersonal, critical-thinking, problem-solving, and technology skills are reinforced in this course through business application projects. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course are simulations, service learning, field trips, job shadowing, apprenticeships and internships. Also FBLA leadership activities, meetings, conferences, and competitions provide opportunities for application of instructional competencies.

Prerequisite: Keyboarding /Keyboarding Applications or Introduction to Business Computer Applications

Activities

  • These students assist with maintaining the SHS/SMS Web site.

  • This course covers basic office procedures common to many businesses.

  • Computer activities include solving mathematical problems using Excel, generating reports using Access, creating Web pages and Web sites using FrontPage, and creating fliers using Publisher. 

  • Notes for office procedures are completed using PowerPoint.

  • Students use PowerPoint to generate an organizational chart.

  • Students write letters, memos, and reports using word processing software.

  • Students explore occupations and report on an occupational field.

  • Students prepare a presentation and present the presentation in front of the class.
