SUMNER HIGH SCHOOL DRESS CODE

 

STATEMENT OF TANGIPAHOA  PARISH SCHOOL BOARD POLICY:

The policy of the Tangipahoa Parish School Board shall be that no mode of attire will be considered proper for school wear that disrupts the classroom and/or the school's positive learning environment. The principal or his/her designee of each school shall make the final decision as to what is considered proper dress according to the guidelines provided.

 

The Board's position is that it wants to teach each student to use good judgment in his/her total appearance so that the attention of others is not distracted from the purpose of the school. Cleanliness and the values of the community shall be a basic consideration.

 

The dress and grooming of the students shall be that which, in the opinion of the ordinary reasonable person, contributes to the health of the individual and which is non-disruptive to the educational activities and processes of a school.

 

Any clothing which displays sexually suggestive, vulgar, or drug-related wording or graphics, or which provoke violence or disruption in the school shall not be worn.

 

Other special occasions allowing/requiring a modification of the dress code must be approved by the principal.

 

Hair Jewelry Hats Shoes
  1. Hairstyles and mustaches shall be clean,
    neatly groomed and shall not distract from
    the learning environment nor be a safety
    factor from any of the school's curricular offerings. 
  2.  Beards/goatees are not permitted.
  1. Earrings are allowed for females. Earrings are not allowed for males.

  2. NO other body piercing jewelry is permitted.

  1. No hats, caps, or other headgear shall be worn on the school campus on regular school days, except when a medical condition or religious belief so warrants.
  1. Shoes must have a closed heel and toe.
  2. No crocs, flip-flops, shower shoes, bedroom slippers, sandals, wedged shoes, cleated shoes, skate shoes, track shoes, platform shoes, high heel shoes, or knee-high shoes/boots will be allowed.
  3. If the shoes have laces, strings, or velcro closures, those items must be fastened.
  4. All items of clothing must be worn as intended by design.

 

SHIRTS:

  1. Shirts must be polo style with a collar, with or without a pocket, or oxford style with buttons up the front. Shirts can be made of cotton or polyester blend.

  2. Shirts may be of one solid color, red, white, or navy blue. Shirts may not include any stripes or designs in the collar or anywhere else.

  3. No visible brand name, label, monogram, or logo of any type may be displayed.

  4. Sleeves on short sleeve shirts must extend past down the arm, approximately halfway between the shoulder and elbow. No sleeveless garments shall be worn. No cap sleeves.

  5. No midriff shirts or blouses shall be worn. Shirts must be worn tucked inside the student's pants or shirt.

  6. Shirts must be long enough to easily remain tucked inside the student's pants or shirt when the student is bent over or seated. Do not purchase youth large or other shirts that either do not or barely tuck in the student's pants.

  7. Turtleneck shirts or shirts with a zipper are not permitted.

  8. Undershirts must be solid white crew neck t-shirt with no writing or trim with standard sleeves that must not extend past the sleeves on uniform shirt.

  9. All items of clothing must be worn as intended by design.

 

PANTS:

  1. Pants must be Khaki or navy blue twill with or without belt loops or pockets.

  2. No shorts shall be worn to school.

  3. No visible brand name, label, monogram, or logo of any type may be displayed. THIS INCLUDES PANTS WITH STITCHED LOGOS SUCH AS AMERICAN EAGLE AND AEROPOSTALE.

  4. No Khaki colored jeans, any pants with metal rivets, sagging, oversized, wide legged, bell bottom, cargo, safari, Capri, crop, carpenter, stretch, or spandex pants are permitted.

  5. Pants must be hemmed and not touch the ground. No frayed or unsown hems in pants are permitted.

  6. Pants with splits in the legs of the pants are not allowed.

  7. Pants must be worn at the waist, defined as even with the student's hip bone. No hip hugger pants are permitted.

  8. No shorts are allowed.

  9. If boots are worn, pants legs must be worn outside of the boots.

  10. All items of clothing must be worn as intended by design.

 

SKIRTS:

  1. Skirts must be Khaki or navy blue twill with or without belt loops.

  2. Skirts may be pleated, straight, or full, and may be in the basic a-line style or bib style.. 3. No rivets are allowed.

  3. No shorts are allowed.

  4. Skirts must come to the knee or below.                  

  5. No visible brand name, label, monogram, or logo of any type may be displayed.

  6. All items of clothing must be worn as intended by design.

 

BELTS:

  1. A belt must be worn if the pants or skirt have belt loops.

  2. Belts must be made of canvas or leather. No chain, metal, or sash belts are permitted. 3. Belts must be an appropriate style and length.

  3. Belts must be buckled. The belt may not hang down.

  4. Belts must be worn visible without pulling up the shirt.

  5. All items of clothing must be worn as intended by design.

 

OUTERWEAR PERMITTED IN THE CLASSROOM:

  1. Sweatshirts must be of one solid color, either, red, white, or navy blue. No hoods or zippers are allowed.

  2. Sweaters must be of one solid color, either red, white, or navy blue. Sweaters may be pullover, button-up, vest, or zipper. No hood is allowed.

  3. Jackets must be of one solid color, either red, white, or navy blue. Jackets may use a zipper or snaps. No hood is allowed. 4. No visible brand name, label, monogram, or logo of any type may be displayed on any sweatshirt, sweater, or jacket.

  4. Any outerwear must be worn over a regulation uniform shirt.

 

IMPORTANT: The principal or his/her designee shall make the final decision as to what is considered proper or improper dress according to the above guidelines. Please consult the administrator if you are in doubt about any clothing item BEFORE your child wears it to school.
