Softball Team's Spring Clean Up
On January 12, 2008, the Sumner Cowgirls softball team held a spring cleanup. The Cowgirls spent time and a tremendous amount of effort cleaning up the Kentwood baseball/softball field. The field they are going to play on needed much work. Together, though, through teamwork and cooperation, they cleaned it. The players were working, having fun, and bonding to make a stronger team. The girls and parents participated in the clean up. Thanks to the parents for their help and support!

Senator Ben Nevers Visits Sumner
Senator Nevers visited Sumner Middle School as Ms. Bahm’s guest speaker for the 6th grade on November 1. While he was here, he showed the students some examples of what state government does. He held a meeting to decide what kind of pizza the students would vote for using two students as representatives. The vote then had to pass as law or be vetoed by the Governor. Senator Nevers also gave them a chance to ask him questions. Before leaving, he told the students that he was donating a check for $100 for their next thin crust, pepperoni pizza party, because that was the kind of pizza that the students voted on.
Senator Nevers also presented the school with a state flag. The students really enjoyed his visit and learned about state government.

Homecoming Queen: Morgan Creel and Senior Maids
A Game to Remember
With the hope of winning their first district game, the Sumner Cowboys found a new level of ability. Holding the Loranger Wolves at bay with their best efforts, no hope was lost. Even when the Cowboys were against the ropes, they took risks, going for a two-point conversion instead of kicking one. Even losing the game 6-7, they showed no sign of remorse knowing that they competed with a fervent fury that bought them the respect of the audience. They fought for every inch of the 88-yards total offense, even if the Wolves showed the promise that the Cowboys expected of them. This changed the Wolves’ mark to 4-2, and changed the Cowboys’ to 2-4, with no district wins and one district loss.
No one thought that this would be an easy victory for either team, and that was reflected in the constant struggle between them. Both showed even strength and pride in what they did, and promised to be winning teams throughout the season. Just get ready to see the Cowboys win back momentum in the next game as they host Bogalusa.

Friends or Foes
In a game where the object is to knock players down and hurl a projectile at your teammates, sometimes we all slowly forget that there are still some people who care about the people they’re trying to beat. And so I asked, what trace of kindness could be left on a field of armored titans with the intent of leaving each other battered? When Logan Hargis, an inspiration and driving force for the cowboys passed, it was a tragic blow that sent many of us, on the field and off, reeling. But when Pope John Paul raised money to help pay for funeral expenses, and read from the scripture during an in-game ceremony, it showed everyone that competitors may just be competitive friends. Pope John Paul gave us a glimpse of inspiration as to what we should aim to be as players and people.
The Sumner Cowboys wish Pope John Paul the best year they could have. Noble competitors, and an inspiring group of individuals, their kindness will not be forgotten. Their gesture of sympathy truly shows what is right in high school sports today.
Sumner vs. Varnado
Neck and Neck
With a good two-touchdown head-start on Varnado, Cowboy fans were brimming with excitement, eyes glued to the field as they watched what seemed like their team sailing to an easy victory. But against real competitors, nothing could be written in stone. In an amazing display of athletics on the part of both teams, Varnado and Sumner seemed clearly stalemated by halftime, tying before the end of the first quarter. Neither team had a tangible lead since then. With the combined efforts of Sumner's talented starters, and three touchdown passes thrown by our Gridiron Player of the Week, Chris Gill, Varnado and Sumner both put up a brutal fight into overtime. Finally, with weary smiles and worn muscles, the cowboys walked off the field feeling like kings as they won the game 24-30.
