Sumner Middle School students have once again surpassed their goal of $3,000 and have raised an amazing $5,308.72 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The Math-A-Thon was sponsored by math department teachers; Ms. Sharon Fairburn, Ms. Tammie Roberts, and Ms. Lisa Piner. Ms. Fairburn has coordinated the event for seven years. To date, Sumner students have collected an astonishing $28,367.48.
This year, students who raised $35 or more received a yellow ribbon to hang on a tree in the school’s foyer in memory of someone who has passed away from cancer or in honor of someone who is struggling, or has struggled, with this illness. Every year, the child who donates the most over $125, is awarded a prize. Eight grader, Emily Dykes, is this year’s top donor and will receive a digital camera. Because of a job well done, all of the participants will have a “Fun Day” event in April. At this event, the children will be able to participate in a drawing for prizes, play some games, and listen to music. Anyone that would like to help support this “Fun Day” event for our children is encouraged to contact Sharon Fairburn at Sumner Middle School @ (985) 310-2152.
The money raised each year helps the children who are stricken with cancer, AIDS, sickle cell disease, and other catastrophic illnesses. If you would like more information about Math-A-Thon or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, visit www.stjude.org.
