Help Save Louisiana's Wetlands:
at Sumner High School
December 28-January 6

Sumner Junior High is participating in a Christmas Tree Recycling Program to help conserve wetlands in our parish. Trees can be dropped off at the tennis court at the school after all decorations have been removed. No flocked trees please. This project is available thanks to the work of local teachers, Turtle Cove Environmental Research Station, and Waste Management of Tangipahoa Parish. These students traveled to the elementary school to promote this event.
Deana Simmons' English III class visited Mrs. Joy Moore's 1st grade class at Spring Creek on Wednesday, December 14. The juniors read Christmas stories to the first graders along with making cards and reindeer bags for the reindeer food they prepared. Santa even paid the first graders a visit. (Santa was our very own Ryan McGregor, and he didn't even get extra points). Both classes enjoyed the day. It was truly a Christmas blessing.
The new junior high will be finished around January and will service grades 6-8. Students will begin attending the new junior high in August 2006. The new school will have two assistant principals who will help run the school. These assistant principals are Mr. Stuckey and Ms. Hammons. They will also continue their positions at the high school. Mr. Alston will be the principal of both the junior high and high school. The junior high will have a multi-purpose building, which will be used as a gym and an eating area. Sixth-grade teachers will be hired for the new school. The school will hold about 350 to 375 students. Course offerings at the new junior high will remain the same. Parents will take students to the area where the buses load and unload. Additional parking will be provided where the old tennis court is now. The old junior high building will be used for high school classes. We believe this new junior high building will have a positive effect on the school. More space for classes will provide greater opportunities for our students.
