Introduction
Let’s
talk about movement! What causes objects to move? Pushes and pulls are two
ways that objects start moving, stop moving, and change speed and direction.
Pushes and pulls can be caused by gravity, magnetism, and static electricity.
In our search today, we are going to learn new things about movement caused
by magnetism. We will discover how many kinds of magnets there are and how magnets are used in machines.
The
Tasks
These
are some things that we will be able to do because of
our
search:
L Make a
poster which shows new things you’ve learned about magnets
L Share
posters and discuss
L Compile
posters to make a big book about magnets and share
L Write
about objects which magnets attract and illustrate

Activity
#1
View: http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Palms/8423/magnet.htm
Listen to introduction.
Click on http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Palms/8423/what.htm
What are two kinds of magnets?
Discuss and dictate answers to reporter.
Go to How a Magnet Works http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Palms/8423/domain.htm
Discuss and review ideas with classmates and reporter.
Go to Usage of Magnets today
http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Palms/8423/today.htm
Listen and read about how magnets are used in homes.
How many of the machines (appliances) mentioned do you
use in your home?
Discuss and review ideas with classmates and reporter.
Activity #2
Go to work table and see which objects stick to the
magnets.
Discuss with your classmates and reporter.
Activity #3
Go to computer with partner and use MSWord to write a
sentence about which objects stuck. Draw a picture to match your sentence.
Activity #4
Divide your poster into four equal parts. In the top
left part, list the two kinds of magnets.
In the top right part, draw and label the objects that
you discovered would stick to the magnet.
In the bottom left part, draw and label all the machines
used in your home with motors that use electromagnets.
In the bottom right part, write the title Magnets,
then your full name, and the date.
Evaluation

Your project on magnets will be graded based on
completeness, neatness, and following directions when creating your poster.

Conclusion
Did
you find magnets attractive? We learned some very interesting things about
them. I think you should share what you’ve learned with others. I think we
should take turns checking out our big book on Magnets and
sharing it with those at home! How should we decide who gets to take it home
first?
