Introduction

A very hungry caterpillar pops out of an egg one night and begins eating everything in sight. He eats and eats until he finds the food that is just right for him. He is not a little caterpillar anymore but a big, fat caterpillar.

Would you like to find out what happens to this big, fat caterpillar? He builds a certain kind of house and comes out of it looking very different from a big fat caterpillar.

It will be your quest to discover what kind of home this caterpillar builds to come out looking so different from the big, fat caterpillar he was before. You will be an expert on caterpillars and what they become.

The Task

After reading the book, THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR BY Eric Carle, work with your partner to discover the following:

The Process

  1. Read THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR with your partner.
  2. If you want more information on Eric Carle, visit this site: The official Eric Carle site. http://www.eric-carle.com/
  3. Visit the Enchanted Learning butterfly site. Click on it to learn about the stages a caterpillar goes through to become a butterfly.
  4. http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/butterfly/

  5. Now print your own copy of the butterfly’s life cycle, from egg, to larva to pupa to adult. http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/butterfly/
  6. 4. Now you need to make a flipchart of the stages a caterpillar goes through to become a butterfly. Click on the life cycle of a butterfly" http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/butterfly/
  7. Now we are going to write a story. It will be called "Very Smart First Graders."Take each month, posted on the chalkboard, and tell what you have learned and then illustrate with a picture that shows what you have done. Try hard to follow the example of Mr. Carle! In the end of the story instead of a beautiful butterfly you will become a SECOND GRADER!
  8. Wow your quest is almost over . Would you like to make a beautiful butterfly?
  9. Get a piece of construction paper. Draw a butterfly and decorate it with sequence yarn glitter, markers, or whatever you like. Now cut it out and hang it on the class butterfly board.
