INTRODUCTION
Every year the American Library Association chooses an outstanding book written for children/young adults and awards that book the Newbery Award Medal. You have been chosen to pick a medal winner from the years 1975-1999, and "sell" that book to your fellow classmates as the "best" Newbery Award book for the last twenty-five years!!
TASK
You will utilize the school library, as well as the internet, to find the answers to questions (listed in the Process section below) about the medal and your book. After completing your research, you will put the information in a journal. You will also choose your book by randomly drawing the "year" and after reading it, you will design a flyer and give a book talk to "sell" your book to your classmates!!
PROCESS
Step 1. Draw a number (which represents the years 1975-1999) to determine what award-winning book you will read.
Step 2. Check your book out from the school library.
Step 3. Develop a journal about the medal and the author of your book following the steps listed below.
A. Use the websites listed in the Resource section below to answer the following questions about the Newbery Medal.
1. Give a description of the medal. You may include a drawing.
2. Who awards the medal and how often is it given.
3. Who is the medal named for.
4. .When was the first medal presented.
5. What is the purpose for giving the medal.
6. What are the "terms" for selecting an award book.
Put all the information you have found in your journal.
Step 4. Supply the following information about the author of your book by once again using the websites listed below.
1. Give the name of the author of your book.
2. Write a biography (at least two paragraphs) of your author.
3. Give the name of at least one other book your author has written.
Put the information in your journal.
Step 5. Finish reading your Newbery novel.
Step 6. Design a flyer as part of your "sell" for your novel. You may use any material you like.
Step 7. Prepare a 3-5 minute booktalk on the novel you have read.
Remember to keep your personal opinion out of your booktalk.
Do not tell the whole story, especially the ending! Tell just enough to get your
fellow students interested enough to read the novel themselves. .
