Introduction

Do you remember how we learned to conjugate, translate, and use –er regular verbs?  Today we are going to learn how to conjugate, translate, and use regular –ir and –re verbs.

Verbs are important in written and oral communication because they are the nucleus of the sentence.  We want
to be able to make sense and be grammatically correct in speaking and writing French.

Also, verb study in French will help you in English because you will review the three ways that French present
tense verbs are translated in English.  As you write and use your new verbs to form sentences, you will be

reviewing noun-adjective structure (position and agreement) and various idioms.  You will be threading together
parts of grammar structure into an organized and meaningful expression-a sentence.

The Task

Today you will learn to conjugate –ir or –re regular verbs and translate them. You will prepare a Powerpoint
presentation of verb stem plus endings and English translation (showing simple, emphatic, and present progressive
forms of the present tense.  You will then write six French sentences per –ir or –re example verb (using other

French grammar structures:  idioms, contractions with a or de, adverbs, and irregular and regular noun plurals).

One half of the groups will take –ir verbs and the other half will take –re verbs for Webquest.  Be sure to let

me review your verbs to avoid duplication.  We will use 3 class periods to create the Webquest and a 4th to
 present them to the class.

In your Powerpoint presentation, use artwork to illustrate action in the verb.  A member of the group will read

correctly the sentences as they are presented with the Powerpoint.  (Each member of the group will participate
orally in some facet of the class presentation).

The Process

First, your class will divide into 4 person groups. Then,  each group will conjugate their chosen –ir or-re verb.
(Teacher review). Then, decide which of the 4 roles you will take for your group.  (One role per individual in the group).

CORINNE CONJUGATION  likes to  put things together.  She will put subject and stem and endings together to
create subject-verb forms.

SYLVIE SYNTHESIS will  put subject and verb part from Corinne Conjugation and add idioms, objects, and
prepositional phrases to create an 8-10 word French sentence.

THERESE TRANSLATOR will translate sentences into English (showing how the English verb can take 3 different
forms to show present tense.

ROBERT RECITATION will read sentences aloud with correct pronunciation.

After you have finished your research, your group will create a Powerpoint presentation about how to conjugate
the verbs using subject, stem and endings.

You will show the three forms of the English translation.

You will show the created sentences with graphics and art work.

ROBERT RECITATION will read the sentences.  The 5-slide minimum Powerpoint will be turned in for teacher review.

Include a multiflow chart on the process steps to conjugate an –ir or-re verb.  The chart can be separate from
the Powerpoint or in an additional slide if in the Powerpoint.  The entire presentation should be from 8-10
minutes to share your findings with your classmates.
