Mrs. Cook's

We had a lot of fun on St. Patrick's Day learning about Irish traditions, leprechauns, clovers, etc.  To start the day, we   made a circle map of what St. Patrick's made us think of.  We watched a video and read a book that taught us all about the Irish holiday.  Then we graphed whether or not we believed in leprechauns.  Mrs. Jennifer painted festive clovers on our faces and helped her daughter make this clover shaped cake for a special snack!

For a family project, we made Leprechaun traps and brought them to school to share.  We had to explain and demonstrate the mechanics of how it would trap a Leprechaun.  We came up with some really creative ideas and had a lot of fun working together with our families at home.  After we shared them with the class, we set them outside in hopes of catching a thumb-sized person dressed in green!

We all became believers when we had a little visit from the Leprechauns while we were away at lunch.  They left our classroom in total disarray and took all of the gold from our traps.  They left us a couple of messages and also left us a few tiny green footprints (Leprechaun sweat is green!)
We couldn't believe our eyes!

We went outside to see if the leprechauns missed any 4-leaf clovers.  We collected many clovers and used them as counters for addition number sentences.  The Leprechauns must have gotten all the 4-leafers this year!

We sorted the marshmallows from Lucky Charms cereal and graphed how many we had.  We actually put the marshmallows on the graph to make a picture graph and then turned it into a bar graph!  We talked about who had more/less of each marshmallow!  Then we gobbled them up of course!

We studied our potatoes very carefully and then had to close our eyes while Mrs. Cook mixed them up.  When we opened our eyes, we had to tell which one was ours and how we knew.  We talked about characteristics, which led into a discussion on describing words.
We also talked about how different and how unique we all are,
just like every potato!

We sang I Like Potatoes on Steve & Greg's We All Live Together volume 5 CD.  We made a list of all the different ways you can eat potatoes and graphed our favorite 2 ways!
We also sized our potatoes from biggest to smallest!

Of course we weighed our potatoes to see who had the heaviest potato and who had the lightest!  We also measured our potatoes with unifix cubes and lined them up from shortest to longest!

We made Potato Heads by decorating our potatoes with hair, eyes, nose, and mouth.  We named our silly potato friends!

This was a fun homework assignment (to color the clover in neat, colorful details) that we turned into a class writing activity.
We wrote: "This is my lucky clover."

No St. Patrick's Day Unit would be complete without learning about rainbows!  We made a tree map that showed which of us had ever seen a real rainbow!  Then we got to "Taste the Rainbow" by making a Skittles graph!

We sang several songs about the colors of the rainbow.  Then we talked about primary and secondary colors.  We made the secondary colors by mixing the primary colors (red, blue, and yellow food coloring in water.)  Then we put the colors in the order that we see them in the rainbow!

This little book helped us remember the order of the rainbow's colors.  We had lots of fun sing/reading it!

We also painted a rainbow in centers while we took turns working as a team on our giant torn paper collage rainbow!
This was a real class effort and it turned out beautiful!

We wrote in our journals about what we might find at the end of the rainbow.  When we came in the classroom one day, the Leprechauns had left a pot of gold at the end of our big rainbow!
We used it as counters to help us add and subtract!
