to Mrs. Cook's Space Photos!

We read and made many space books and participated in many activities that were out of this world!  We graphed whether or not we believed there is life on other planets and then made this little UFO.  As you can see, we made patterned lights around the  spaceship and then we had to name our little alien friend!

We sang The Planet Song on Dr. Jean's Is Everybody Happy? CD.  The kids really caught on to all nine planets quickly thanks to the silly lyrics:

I bought a Mercury to visit friends on Venus,
But how on Earth will I ever get to Mars?
Jumpin' Jupiter!  Saturn's party is Saturday,
Uranus and Neptune will ride in Pluto's car!

After talking about all nine planets and looking them up on the following websites, we made a solar system banner.  Then we sang the song again and talked about which planet was first, third, fifth, ninth, etc.  Great practice for ordinal positions!

We are learning numbers to 50 as well as addition, so using our "moon rocks" for counters made math lots of fun!  We also reviewed patterns with the "moon rocks" and measured the lengths of some of the space ships that we made.

We talked about other things that were in the sky like comets, asteroids, and meteors.  We made comets and played a game where we threw the comets across the line at the other team.  At the whistle blow, the team with the fewest comets was the winner!  We also compared more and fewer after each whistle blow!  We used greater and less than signs to show who had greater than/less than on a dry erase board outside!  This was so much fun!

We made "shapeships" from a pattern in The Mailbox magazine.  We used attribute shapes to fit into the parts of the spaceship.  Then we tallied how many we had of each shape and talked about more/fewer.

As an "at home" project, we had to make a spaceship and a planet of our choice.  We also had to be able to tell the name of our planet, its position from the sun and 2 facts about it.  Look at how creative we were!

Mr. and Mrs. Cook worked hard to create this planetarium for us.  We watched the tape Magic School Bus: Lost in the Solar System.  We then read the book and did the next best thing since we didn't have a magic school bus.
This was such a fun and exciting way to review and end our Space unit!
