My educational philosophy is based on the belief of student self-discovery. I feel that students are more likely to learn and understand concepts if provided with educational experiences that encourage self-discovery in realistic situations. As a teacher, I also believe that I maintain the responsibility of creating a classroom of community learning where approximations are valued and a positive, supportive environment exists.

Flexibility is also key in maintaining an effective learning environment, so as to meet the various individual learning styles and needs of every student. Each student should receive an equal opportunity to learn and discover in different ways. Students should also be responsible for their own behavior, learning, and choices as the teacher sets forth an effective management plan that focuses on procedures and routines, time management, organization, effective planning, and positive communication with students and parents.

As a teacher, I feel that the major components of an effective kindergarten curriculum integrates subject matter. While math, reading, science, social studies, art, music, and physical education are all necessary parts of the learning experience, I feel that they should not be isolated. Students need to understand how all of these content areas relate to real life as a whole and be able to approach situations in a problem-solving manner. By planning my instruction based on the Louisiana state content area benchmarks and standards, I intend to integrate the curriculum through hands-on activities, cooperative learning, integration of technology, and a variety of assessments (formal and informal). By applying strategies and techniques in a variety of situations, students will develop the higher-level thinking abilities that will make them life-long learners.

As one of the newer teachers at Perrin Early Learning Center, I have so many ideas and goals I wish to share with my future students. I reflect often on how I can improve our learning environment from day to day, month to month, and year to year.  I desire not only to be an inspiration to my students, but also to be an encourager for them to think and discover things for themselves. I also hope to learn from my students, my experiences, and other teachers as I strive to constantly better myself as a teacher in education and in life.
