Gingerbread
 |
|

For
the first week of school, we read different versions of
"The Gingerbread Man." There are so many
activities that can go along with this unit. We found a note
that the gingerbread man left in the book after he jumped out of
the oven and ran. The note read: "I
thought it would be fun, at school to run around,
And see if you catch up with me so that I may be found.
I will leave lots of clues, if you follow every rule,
As you look here, there and everywhere, there is at Perrin
School.
Look, look, as hard as you can,
You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man!" The
clues then lead us all around the school as we got oriented with
all the buildings and important people on our school campus.

"I ran to
the Gym
to have fun and play,
And see where you go
on a cold rainy day!" |

"I ran to
Mrs. Sledge
to take a few looks,
at the Literacy Lab's
fun centers and books!" |

"The
Lunchroom is nice
for food that is yummy,
when you hear a growl
that comes from your tummy!" |

"The
Playground is fun,
with slides that are cool!
But when the bell rings,
'Hands on knees' is the rule!" |

"Run,
run,
as fast as you can.
You can't catch me,
I'm the Gingerbread Man!" |

"To the
Water Fountain,
for a nice cold drink!
I'm still much faster
than you, I think!" |

"Mrs.
Foster is so very nice.
Mrs. Bonnie helps her too!
The Office is where they work like bees to make school fun for
you!" |

"Mrs.
Cat's Computer Lab
is a fun place to go
to learn and play computer games
that help your brain to grow!" |

"The
Workroom is always
a place that is busy.
Teachers work so hard,
it makes me feel dizzy!" |

"I
ran all over school,
And now I must confess,
Of all the places that I've been,
Mrs. Cook's class is the best!" |
 |

"Since I
could not stay,
I left something for your tummy.
Take a bite and think of me
And taste how very yummy!" |

We

|
|

We made a class book of "How to Keep the Gingerbread Man
From Running Away." We had to fill in "I will
bite off his________ (head, arm, leg.) and tear off that piece
of the Gingerbread man that we had decorated.
|
|
We
talked about how the Gingerbread Man didn't follow the rules in
the story and what the consequences were. Then we went
over our classroom
rules
and the importance of each one.
|
|
I
made a large child size gingerbread man from brown bulletin
board paper and sewed him together with a zig zag stitch.
I stuffed him with stuffing (very easy & cute). I put
him in the classroom on Friday and the children were so amazed
that "The Gingerbread Man" was in our room. We
measured how tall he was with a variety of materials (pencils,
toilet paper squares, links, unifix cubes, paperclips, glue
sticks, construction paper etc.) We compared and talked
about why some units of measurement were more or less than
others. Letting them predict which items would take more
or less was fun. I then gave each child a di-cut
gingerbread man and let them measure theirs with items at their
desk. They were very creative in decorating them
when we finished!

|

We read "The
Gingerbread Baby"
by Jan Brett (a class favorite!)
and acted out the story with character
masks!
