Jan McGovern Wins Trip to D.C.

Amidst
the oak trees of the White Oak Plantation, along with eleven other
finalists, Loranger High School Junior Jan McGovern was selected to
go on an all expense paid trip to Washington D.C. in June. After
being selected one of twelve out of 300 essays, McGovern attended a
banquet honoring the twelve finalists where she along with her
parents, English teacher, and school administrators, were treated to
a full course meal. The Rural Electric Youth Tour Essay
Contest is an annual event that, in its 31st year, included essay
entries from around 300 students throughout DEMCO’s seven-parish
service area. Each student who participated wrote an original
essay on one of three topics: Electricity and Me, What is good in my
community, or Global Warming: Fact or Fiction? Ms. McGovern
chose to write on the topic of global warming. Once at the
banquet, each finalist took a test on DEMCO facts then presented
their essays in front of about 60 people which included
representatives from DEMCO. After all essays were read and
tests were graded, the judges selected four students to receive the
all expense paid trip to Washington D.C. The judging was based
primarily on the oral presentation. “As a former English
teacher, I tend to be particularly critical of diction, vocabulary,
and delivery.” Loranger principal Dr. Billie Theriot said, “Jan was
almost flawless in every aspect. In addition, her delivery was
pleasant, poised, and entirely natural while still exhibiting a
touch of humor in just the right places.” Jan is a 4.0 student
and BETA member at Loranger High. She is the 2nd Vice President of the Loranger FFA
Chapter, and is also the junior class president. Congratulations
Jan, we are so proud of you.
