Welcome to the Hammond School District Fine Arts Program-The Academic Center for the Visual and Performing Arts.  We serve students in the Accelerated Magnet Program at Hammond Eastside Elementary and Hammond Westside Elementary; as well as traditional students at Hammond Eastside, Hammond Westside, and Woodland Park Early Learning Center.

The Accelerated Magnet Program’s emphasis is on the immersion of the fine arts throughout the student’s school day.  Multiple Classes in Theatre Arts, Vocal and Instrumental Music, Dance, and Visual Arts are scheduled weekly.   The focus of our learning is on the process, not the product of learning.  It is by daily activities and experiences that the young learner will grow and prosper.

An appreciation for the visual and performing arts is demonstrated in the classroom by the introduction of the great masters as well as contemporary visual and performing artists.

Our year is composed of weekly lessons in the visual and performing arts, field trips to Columbia Theatre and other fine art performances, NO Museum of Modern Art, House of Blues, Educational Outreach Activities, Outdoor Learning Days in Amite, LA (Greater Northern Tangipahoa Parish River Bottom Woods Expedition in the Arts), Children Concert at Southeastern Louisiana University, and our May Musical Performance at Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts ( this year, Disney’s Production of “The Jungle Book”).

Our students are important to us.  The team of specialists include:  Desiree Wardsworth, Dance and Theatre Arts; Norene Tucker, Vocal and Instrumental Music; Rene Fletcher, Visual Arts and Production Tech; Charlotte Crier, Visual Arts and Buddy and Wee Choir Assistant Director; and Cynthia Tricou, Creative Movement, Music, Storytelling and Theatre Arts, and Buddy and Wee Choir Director.  We are here to serve and teach your children.  Each specialist has diverse and professional experiences that create a team of excellence for this program.   We expect Excellence and the students respond well to this expectation.  We believe it is “ALL ABOUT THE CHILDREN” and we do our best to bring them a program rich in activities that will increase their knowledge and create an environment that will help them grown to be strong and successful members of our society.

We carry into this year a celebration of past successes, but more so, a continuing spirit for growth and excellence across the board for our program and the students we teach.

Our Traditional Program, “Arts for All” promotes an exposure to and appreciation for the Visual and Performing Arts by exposing the student to what many consider the “classics”.  Students develop creativity and critical thinking skills while learning to appreciate the great visual and performing artists of the past and present.  Weekly classes in Music and Movement and Visual Arts are presented to students, Pk-6th grades at Woodland Park Early Learning Center, Hammond Eastside Elementary, and Hammond Westside Elementary.  Our team of specialists for this program include:  Ellen Sweetman, Vocal and Instrumental Music;Corey Smith, Music and Movement; George Sanders, Music and Movement; Cynthia Tricou, Creative Movement, Music, and Storytelling; Charlotte Crier, Visual Arts; Kathy Kovacs, Visual Arts; Jennifer Disher, Visual Arts; Stephanie Amos, Visual Arts.  We welcome this year Jennifer Disher, Kathy Kovacs, and George Sanders to our team!  Our Fine Art Specialists continue to strive for excellence with the traditional students bringing them activities to ignite their minds and expand their awareness of the world around them through musical and visual experiences.
