Parental Involvement Plan

2007-2008

The faculty and staff are committed to the involvement of parents and the community in the success of our school. We understand the importance of the parental connection between home and school. This plan was created with a strong parent component to assure the educational growth of our students:

Mission Statement:

The purpose of our school is to provide all students with the educational skills needed to meet the challenges of the 21st Century.

Parental Philosophy:

Hammond Eastside Upper faculty and staff believe a strong parental involvement is essential to an effective school. We further believe a combined effort of parents, teachers, and community will assure a strong foundation for student success and life-long learning.

The HEU Plan:

The following plan has been established in attempts to involve our parents in the success of their children at Hammond Eastside Upper:

1.     Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO)- At the beginning of the year a PTO drive will give parents and community members opportunities to join our organization. Parents and community members will be presented with a PTO membership card on receipt of their $2.00 donation toward the establishment of the PTO fund. This fund will be used by the organization during the year for projects established by the committee.

Goal: 20% of the parents will join the PTO for the year 2007-08.

2.     Open House Parent Night- each year HEU holds an Open House Parent Night in conjunction with Hammond Eastside Primary to encourage parents to meet their children’s teachers and be aware of school functions and activities planned during the year. The Title I program is discussed along with a review of test scores from the previous year. Parents are encouraged to visit each the teachers’ rooms to see the educational progress of their child.

Goal: 35% of the parents will be in attendance at the Open House scheduled for August, 2007.

3.     Student/Parent/Teacher Compact- The Student/Parent/Teacher compact is an agreement between the parties to uphold their responsibilities as part of the educational success for each student. This compact is prepared by a committee made up of a representative of each group. It make each group aware of their responsibilities in building an effective school community.

Goal: 100% of compacts signed and returned housed at the school site.

4.     Parental teaching workshops: In order for effective learning to take place there must be a partnership built between home and school. These workshops are designed to aide parents in learning techniques and helpful ways to assist their children at home with reinforcement of skills learned at school. Throughout the year these workshops are scheduled to provide beneficial assistance to parents who wish to help their children. The parents are also made aware of the Parish Parenting Center’s scheduled events throughout the year. Topics covered with include Math, Language Arts, Conflict Resolution, Raising Test Scores, and Family Homework Tips.

Goal: Provide opportunities for at least three workshops during the year for parental participation. Twenty-five percent of our parents to attend at least one of the workshops offered during the 2007-2008 year.

5.     Parent/Teacher Conferences- To insure each parent of their welcomed presence at school, HEU has an “Open Door” policy offered to parents. They may visit the school anytime during the school day and schedule appointment with the principal and/or teachers concerning the progress and welfare of their child. Conference times are scheduled before school, after school, and at the teacher’s planning time during the day. Phone conferences are also encouraged by both parents and teacher to keep the home/school communication lines open for the benefit of the student. Parents will also be contacted through "School Messenger" of absences and upcoming events.

Goal: Ninety percent of parent will make contact with teacher by scheduled appointment time or by phone contact at least once during the school year to update student progress

6.     Weekly Progress Reports/Six-Weeks Report Cards- Reporting the progress of students often is necessary for their overall achievement. Each week the teachers will sent home the “Test Folder” which will contain the previous week’s work and grades given. The parent will sign and date the designated sign-in sheet before returning it to the teacher.

Each six weeks a computer generated progress reports and report card will be sent home with the student to update parents on their progress. Along with the current grades behavioral/educational comments will be added to inform parents of reasons for successes/failures. Parent will have the opportunity to access the "Parent Command Center." They will be able to view grades, attendance, and discipline records.

Goals: 100% of parents will be contacted each week and every six weeks on the progress of their child through the “Weekly Test Folder” and the computer generated report card.

7.     Tangipahoa Parish School Handbook- Each year the Tangipahoa Parish School Board issues a copy of the parish handbook to each child in the first days of school. This handbook is discussed in the classroom with students. Students are encouraged to take the handbook home to their parents to provide parents with vital information concerning their rights and responsibilities. Parents are encouraged to contact the school if they have any concerns or questions.

Goal: 100% of parents receive a Tangipahoa Parish School Handbook from the school site in the first days of school.
