Mrs. Kathy's kindergartners learned about standard and non standard measurement
and the importance of accuracy when measuring. They compared the lengths
and widths of classroom objects using pieces of yarn. They also measured their school supplies
using cubes and charted their answers. They even measured their shoes. First they
traced their shoe, then they used cubes to see how long they were. The boys and girls
talked about who had the longest shoe and who had the shortest. Then they guessed the
length of Ms. Kathy's shoe! John Walker guessed the correct number.

Ms. Gerald's 1st grade class created an organ vest during a recent study on the
human body in science. They learned what each organ looked like and discussed
what each of there functions were.

during a social studies lesson on comparing/contrasting city and country living.

Ms. Givens, Ms. Kelsey, and Ms.Gerald's classes made Matisse story color collages in art class.
Matisse used different colors to tell stories. Blue was for truth, orange was love or
gentleness, red was to show excitement or fire, and green was for growth or change. The
students seemed to really enjoy making their story color collages like Matisse!

Students were asked to paint our state flower, the Magnolia for the Louisiana
art contest. Pictured below is, Jessica Bonnett, the winner of the contest. She is
in the 4th grade. Her entry will be displayed in the museum at Tickfaw
State Park. All of the students did an excellent job.

Eli, a kindergarten student in Mrs. Kathy Schilling' class, brought some feathered friends to
school for show and tell. His aunt and uncle brought Ike, an African Grey and
Olive, a Yellow Nape, of the parrot family to Amite Elementary.
The boys and girls
had lots of questions and stories for their guests. They learned that Ike can say
up to 3,000. words and can speak in sentences. He is very particular about what he eats.
Ike is protective of Willie. Olive mimics what she hears and can crack an almond shell
with her beak. Both birds were reluctant to speak in front of all of the children.
However, Olive said, "Hello Olive" just as they were leaving.

Constitution Day at AES
Students in Mrs. Kathy Schilling's kindergarten class learned about the
Constitution of the United State of America. They learned that it is a
set of rules that we live by. It is the highest law and decides how the
government works. It was written in 1787. Students watched a video and signed
their own make-believe constitutions.

Bullying
School counselor Mrs. Marquita Imes talked to Mrs. Schilling's
kindergarten students about bullying, feelings, and school rules. She
introduced her friend, Baby Bear, who helps her with the lessons.
Mrs. Imes also read a story about starting kindergarten. She
plans on visiting all of the kindergarten children at AES
every three weeks. Thanks Mrs. Imes and "Baby Bear."
