NAME OF BOOK:  THE GIVING TREE  by Shel Silverstein
 

STANDARD 1  (READING COMPREHENSION)  Have students describe the story setting.  Then have students list the story characters.

STANDARD 2  (WRITING PROCESS)  Have students rewrite the story in which  the boy and the tree trade places.

STANDARD 3  (WRITING/GRAMMAR)  The story frequently repeats the phrase, "and the tree was happy".  Have the students write other ways to say the same thing.

STANDARD 4  (SPEAKING/LISTENING)  Have students act out the story.

STANDARD 5  (INFORMATION SOURCES)  Have students research to find out about the parts of the tree and what they can be used for.

STANDARD 6  (LITERATURE)  Read story to students and have them compare the story to a real life situation.

STANDARD 7  (REASONING AND PROBLEM-SOLVING)  Make some sentence strips stating events in the story.  Have the students put them in sequential order.
