READING FICTIONAL SELECTIONS

1.  Preview the selection.

     A.  Look over the title.

     B.  Look over the selection to get a general idea of the subject.

     C.  Try to predict what the story is going to be about.

2.  Skim the story.

3.  Is there any boldface type?  Any italics?  Dialogue?

4.  Read the selection.  Visualize what you are reading.

5.  Ask:

     A.  Who are the characters?

     B.  Where is the setting?

     C.  Where is the story taking place?

     D.  What is the problem or conflict?

     E.   How is it solved?

6.  Answer the questions.  If you are unsure of answers, go back and reread the story to find the answers.
