POETRY WEEK ACTIVITIES
PRIMARY ACTIVITY
USE THE BOOK CHICKEN SOUP WITH RICE TO TEACH THE MONTHS OF THE YEAR.
EACH MORNING, READ ANOTHER PAGE OF THE BOOK. DISPLAY THE NAME OF
THE MONTH. REPEAT THE PREVIOUS DAYS' PAGES BEFORE READING THE NEW
PAGE FOR THE DAY. THIS IS A GREAT WAY TO TEACH THE MONTHS OF THE
YEAR TO PRIMARY LEVEL STUDENTS. |
MONDAY
Introduce the students to HAIKU. Haiku is Japanese verse and is
usually written about nature. It consists of three lines. The
first and third lines have five syllables. The second line has seven
syllables. (There are books of Haiku that are available. Your
school library may have some books that you could use to read to your students
before they begin their own writing.)
TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY
Choose one of the following for each of these days:
1) Read "Humpty Dumpty". Have students write a story
telling why Humpty Dumpty sat on top of the wall.
2) Read "Little Bo Peep". Have students write a story
telling why someone took her sheep.
THURSDAY
Have students write poems about animals. Then edit the poems together
and have them rewrite them on a clean sheet of paper. Have them draw
the shape of the animal they are writing about around the poem. Cut
out the shape and put it on a sheet of construction paper. For example,
if you write about a cat, your paper should be shaped like a cat.
FRIDAY
Have students write limericks.
