WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP MY CHILD?

SUGGESTIONS:
     1)  Have students write all of the steps in solving the word (reading) problems.
     2)  Encourage students to write SOMETHING even if they don't think they know how to work the problem.
     3)  Have students work the problems with and without calculators.
     4)  Students should be encouraged to use the following steps when problem-solving in math.

MATH PROBLEM-SOLVING
1.  UNDERSTAND
     A.  What do you know?
     B.  What do you need to find out?
2.  PLAN
     A.  What will you do?
     B.  What operation or strategy will you use?
3.  SOLVE

     B.  What is the answer?
4.  LOOK BACK

5)  They should identify points, line segments, and lines.
6)  They should identify right angles.
7)  They should be able to find locations on a map.
8)  They should be able to give directions using a map.
9)  They should be able to solve problems related to geometry.
