READING NONFICTIONAL SELECTIONS

 

1.  Preview the selection.

     A.  Look over the title.

     B.  Look over the selection to get a general idea of the subject.

     C.  What is the purpose of the selection?

 

2.  Look for boldface type or italics.

 

3.  Look for quotation marks that would signal dialogue.

 

4.  Read the selection.  Read slowly and carefully.  Visualize what you are reading.

 

5.  What is the author’s purpose?

 

6.  Did the author include many details?

 

7.  Reread the selection.

 

8.  Look for the main idea of each paragraph after you read it.
