ACTIVITY #1
PAGE 2

INTRO Show students two objects – one bendable and one rigid.

Tell students that we are going to be talking about the difference in these objects.

M- Again show the objects to the students.  Show that one bends and the other does not.  Refer to the objects as bendable and rigid.  Then have the students define the words “bendable” and "rigid."  Describe other objects in the room as bendable and rigid.

GP  Create a chart.  On one side, write "bendable" and on the other side, write "rigid."  Hold up some objects, one at a time.  Have students identify them as bendable or rigid.  Write the name of the object in the right column.

IP Have students work in pairs or groups.  Give pair or group a bag of objects.  Have them look at the objects through the bag and predict if they are bendable or rigid.  Then have them remove the objects and classify them as bendable or rigid.  They should create a chart to show their findings.  Have students use a hand lens to observe the objects.

R Ask:
1)  What are the characteristics of a bendable object?
2)  What are the characteristics of a rigid object?
3)  If you were designing a new car, which parts would you make bendable and which parts would you  make rigid?  Why?

C -We have learned about objects being rigid or bendable.  Think about objects in your home  and classify them as rigid or bendable.  For homework, list objects in your home and tell whether they are bendable or rigid.
