Dear Parents/Guardians of Hammond Junior High Magnet Students:
Reading is the most important lifelong skill that we can help our students to learn and to practice. The goal of the Hammond Junior High Magnet School Language A Department is to assist your child in becoming a lifelong reader. The summer months provide the perfect opportunity to extend and enrich your child's reading experiences.
The purpose of this letter is to explain the Summer Reading Program of the Language A Department of Hammond Junior High Magnet School, a requirement for all Hammond Junior High Magnet School students. Every student is required to read “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins. This book was chosen for challenging content, stylistic qualities, and entertainment value. This is in addition to any summer reading assignment for specific programs or classes. A school-wide test will be given to every student during the first week of school. In addition, all content areas will use the book as a foundation for many activities, writings, and projects during the first few weeks of school.
"The Hunger Games" was selected by grade level teachers to support the thematic purposes of their classes. All students must complete assignments based on the summer reading which will count as a significant part of their first semester grade. These assignments include the Book Jacket (Note: All students should have finished reading their books and creating the Book Jacket before school starts!) The due dates for the test and project is August 23 & 24, 2012.
The original letter to parents, the rubric, and directions for the project (the Book Jacket) are attached below to ensure that everyone understands the requirements. We thank you in advance for your support and look forward to an exciting and successful school year for our 7th and 8th grade students.
A child’s ability to succeed in school takes a partnership—one that begins at home and continues in school.
Thanks,
Hammond Jr. High Magnet Language A Department
