Overview

Assist children and youth in homeless situations to attend and succeed in school, including pre-school

Your purchase of Sesame Street products helps support the education of children here at home and around the world.

Ø    Assist in enrollment of students

Ø    Aid parents and students in gathering information about school programs

Ø    Assist in obtaining school records

Ø    Encourage parents/guardians to actively participate in student’s education

Ø    Provide referral information such as medical, mental health, dental, etc.

Ø    Provide school supplies

OBJECTIVES

Provide adequate and equal educational opportunities to children and youth who are homeless

To make homeless students feel welcome and reduce school entry stress

Have access to tutoring and after-school programs to provide academic support

   Definition of Homeless Children and Youth

ü       A child or youth without a fixed, regular and adequate residence is homeless

ü       Living with a friend, relative or someone else because they lost their home or can’t afford a home

ü       Staying in a motel or hotel

ü       Living in an emergency or transitional shelter or a domestic violence shelter

ü       Staying in substandard housing

ü       Living in a car, park, public place, abandon building or bus or train station

ü       Awaiting foster care placement

ü       Living in a runaway or homeless youth shelter

ü       Living in a campground or an inadequate     trailer home

ü       Abandoned in a hospital

Rights and Responsibilities

Children experiencing homelessness have these rights, but not limited to:

  • A free, appropriate public education.
  • Comparable academic, social, psychological, transportation, and other supports that other students receive, even if the school is not a Title I funded school
  • The basic school program offered to all students

School’s Responsibilities:

  • Remove barriers to enrollment, attendance, and school success
  • Reach out to families with information, advocacy, and support
  • Teach to high standards for all students

Parent’s Responsibilities:

  • Enroll their children in school
  • Ensure their children attend school regularly
  • Keep copies of documents important to school enrollment
  • Participate in school activities
