LaTAAP is the new teacher certification process in Louisiana. Its primary goal is the improvement of teaching and learning.  The program has two purposes:

 1. To provide new teachers with a planned program of leadership and support from experienced educators

2. To provide assurance to the state prior to the issuance of a permanent Louisiana teacher certificate that the new teacher demonstrates competency in the understanding and use of the Louisiana Components of Effective Teaching, the teaching standards that form the assessment criteria.

The LaTAAP assistance and assessment process spans four teaching semesters.  A brief description of each semester is given below:

Semester 1 (Assistance)
---
Meet your site-based mentor
---Get to know your school, faculty, and teaching assignment
---Work with your mentor to implement the Louisiana    Components of Effective Teaching
---
Collect portfolio artifacts

Semester 2 (Assistance)
---Work with your mentor to implement the Louisiana        Components of Effective Teaching
---
Collect portfolio artifacts
---Be observed by your site-based mentor and your principal or principal designee  -- These are scripted observations evaluating the teacher on his/her ability to meet the standards outlined in the Louisiana Components of Effective Teaching.
---Complete a PGP (Professional Growth Plan) as agreed upon by your principal and site-based mentor

Semester 3 (Assessment)
---
Complete and submit the LaTAAP portfolio
---Be observed by your principal/designee and an external assessor  -- Formal LaTAAP assessment instruments are utilized during these observations.
---Complete the Semester 3 PGP as designed by your principal/designee and the external assessor.

Semester 4 (Assistance or Assessment)
---
For those who successfully complete the observations and portfolio assessments in semester 3, semester 4 is a final assistance period.

---For those who are unsuccessful with semester 3 observations and portfolio, they must repeat the semester 3 process.
