From elementary school all the way into high school math, the basics of converting gallons-half/gallons-quarts-pints-cups are taught, but not always remembered. To help your students with this fundamental, this lesson utilizes estimation, children's literature (Pigs in the Pantry by Amy Axelrod), visual drawings, hundreds board activities, recipes, to three-dimensional representations (Mr. Measurement).

Teaching, Learning, and Communicating about Fractions

Learning about fractions is an important mathematical goal in grades 3-5. The activity shown in these video clips helps students develop an understanding of several important aspects of fractions, including fractions as parts of a unit whole, representing fractions on a number line, and equivalent fractions (See Related 3-5 Number and Operation Standard). An important part of the activity is helping students explain and communicate their thinking.

This is a measurement lesson that engages the students with creative and fun hands on manipulatives. The lesson reinforces/explores several strands of mathematics such as number sense, estimation, (length, surface area, volume), data analysis, probability, and discrete math in a real-life situation. Math is fun when students are actively engaged in their own learning styles.
