National College Fair – Baton Rouge
RUN DATES:  August 24 & September 16

There will be a National College Fair on Thursday, September 23 in Baton Rouge.  It will be held at the Baton Rouge River Center from 9am- Noon and 6-8pm.  There will be more than 80 colleges/universities participating in this event.  Juniors and seniors:  if you haven’t decided where you want to go to college, you may want to make sure to attend.  For more information, please see the flyer outside the counselor’s office.

Holden After-school ACT Prep Class
RUN DATES: August 23, 24, 25 and September 7 & 9

Holden School will offer an after-school course to help students prepare for the October 23 ACT test.  The course is open to any high school student taking the test in October.  It will meet from 3:30 – 6:30 on 3 different Mondays and the cost is $40.  If you are interested, please see the folder in the counselor’s office to find out how to pre-register.

ITT Technical Institute Senior Day
RUN DATES: September 3 & 20

ITT Technical Institute is hosting its 2nd Annual Senior Day for area high schools on Wednesday, October 6.  The goal is to introduce you to employers who will give you a perspective of what employers are looking for in potential candidates.  If interested, see the folder in the counselor’s office.  The deadline to confirm is Monday, September 27.

Kick-Off LSU
RUN DATES: September 2 & 20 and October 5

Kick-Off LSU is an open house weekend for high school students and their parents to come to campus to discover the opportunities for them at LSU.  Each program will allow participants to get exposed to the opportunities offered at LSU by meeting with campus faculty, staff, current LSU students, representatives from various departments, LSU organizations and to become familiar with campus life at LSU.  The dates are September 17 & 24 and October 1 & 15.  Information is posted outside the counselor’s office.

Lela Scholarship Opportunities
RUN DATES:  August 31, September 8, October 6 & November 10

Lela is Louisiana’s non-profit resource for college and they give out $1000 quarterly scholarships, as well as others.  All Lela Scholarship opportunities are posted on their website, www.askLela.org.  Seniors, you need to sign up today!

Louisiana College Preview Days
RUN DATES:  September 16 & October 5

Louisiana College is hosting two Wildcat Preview Days.  The dates are Saturday, October 2 and Saturday, February 19.  They are also hosting four “Walk Like a Wildcat” overnight visits for students who wish to immerse themselves into campus life.  Those dates are October 14-15; November 11-12; February 24-25; and March 24-25.  To register for any of the visits, go to www.lacollege.edu.  See the flyer posted outside the counselor’s office.

Louisiana Federal Credit Union Scholarship Essay Contest
Announced: August 26 & September 14 & October 14 & November 10

The Louisiana Federal Credit Union is now accepting entries for the 2011 Ronald E. Thomas Memorial Scholarship Program.  A $2000 scholarship will be awarded to a senior.  This year’s essay topic is “Describe five ways you would improve your local community.”  The essay must be received by December 1, 2010.  For more information, see the folder in the counselors’ office.

LSFA’s “Safer” Tuition Reimbursement Grant Website
RUN DATES:  September 29 & October 7

Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps
RUN DATES:  October 8 & November 12

The Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Program was established to educate and train qualified young men and women for service as commissioned officer in the unrestricted line Naval Reserve or Marine Corps Reserve.  The NROTC Scholarship Program plays an important role in preparing mature young men and women for leadership and management positions in an increasingly technical Navy and Marine Corps.  Recipients of the Scholarship receive full tuition, books stipend, educational fees and other financial benefits at many of the country’s leading colleges and universities. Navy ROTC Scholarships
Run Date: May 6

The Navy is currently accepting NROTC Scholarship applications for the graduating class of 2011.  It is open to all 2011 graduates that have a minimum 21 Math & 22 English ACT scores.  Additionally, applicants must be U.S. citizens and be in good health.  You can learn more about the scholarship by visiting the website at www.nrotc.navy.mil.

New York University Diversity Initiatives

Northwestern State University Senior Day
RUN DATE:  October 8 & November 4

Northwestern State University will host their 2010 Senior Day on Saturday, November 13.  Seniors are invited to this free event to explore the many aspects of NSU.  You will receive great give-a-ways and free tickets to a football game.

SLU ACT Test Preparation

Southeastern will be conducting an ACT Prep class prior to the October test and the December test.  The course is designed to assist students develop the skills to improve their ACT scores, emphasizing Math and English.  If interested, please see the flyer outside the counselor’s office for more information.

SLU Upward Bound Program

Information about SLU’s Upward Bound Program is in the counselors’ office.  Upward Bound is a program designed to assist students in successfully making the transition from high school to a college education.  Ninth and tenth grade students are eligible.  See the folder in the counselors’ office for info on applying.

Tangi Night

Tangipahoa Parish College & Career Fair is sponsoring Tangi Night on Tuesday, September 14 from 6-8pm at the Pennington Student Activity Center on Southeastern University’s campus.  This is a time for you to meet with college representatives from Louisiana, Mississippi, and much more.  You will also have the opportunity to meet with banks and lenders to discuss different financial options.  See the poster outside the counselor’s office.

Time out for Tech
RUN DATES:  September 2 &16 and November 2 & 19                

Attention juniors and seniors:  Make your plans to visit Louisiana Tech University on September 25 or December 4 for Time Out for Tech today. University of Louisiana at Lafayette Scholarship
RUN DATES:  September 27 & October 26

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette priority deadline is November 15.    To be eligible, seniors must have applied to ULL, have a minimum ACT composite score of 23, with English ACT minimum 18 and Math ACT minimum 19 and a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.  The deadline to apply to ULL and be considered for one of the many scholarships they offer is November 15.

University of New Orleans Fall Open House

United States Naval Academy Admissions Forum

The United States Naval Academy Admissions announces their Admission Forum.  It will be held on Saturday, September 11 from 1-4 in Alexandria.  The Forum presents an excellent opportunity for counselors, students, and their families to meet the U.S. Naval Academy Officials, alumni, and midshipmen, who will present valuable information and answer your questions.  Any students interested should register on-line at egoevent@usna.edu.  There is a flyer posted outside the counselor’s office.

Washington University in St. Louis Presentation

A representative from Washington University in St. Louis will be at the Baton Rouge Marriott, from 7 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, September 2nd for any students interested in attending their university.  They will also be at the New Orleans Marriott Metairie at Lakeway on Tuesday, September 7 from 7-8 pm.  See the flyer outside the counselors’ office for more information.

Wendy’s High School Heisman Award
Run Date:  September 2, 15 & 29

Wendy’s is now accepting applications for the Wendy’s Heisman Award.  The award honors both male and female high school students who excel in academics, athletics and student leadership.  To be eligible, you must be a senior with at least a “B” grade average and participate in at least one school-sponsored sport.  All interested seniors that qualify need to go on-line at wendysheisman.com.
The first 41,100 applicants will receive a FREE Wendy’s Gift Card.

Wofford College
RUN DATES:  August 18

Wofford College, located in South Carolina, has several scholarship opportunities for juniors and seniors.  If you are interested in the possibility of attending college there, you will want to stop by the counselor’s office and look at the information.
