Abbott & Fenner Scholarship Program

Abbott & Fenner Business Consultants are pleased to be able to continue with their scholarship program for the 6th year. They will be awarding up to $1,000 to the winners each year. To apply, students will submit an essay on the topic that appears on the scholarship page of their website: www.abbottandfenner.com/scholarships.htm. The deadline to submit your essay is June 14th. 

American Legion Need a Lift?

Seniors: For scholarship and financial aid information at your fingertips, you will want to visit the American Legion’s Need a Lift? website at www.legion.org/needalift to review the College Financial Aid Handbook. This is an opportunity for you to get money for college – the kind you don’t pay back!!

BigSun Athletic Scholarship
Announcement Date(s): December 4, January 9, February 6, & March 6

The BigSun Organization is proud to be able to continue to help young athletes succeed in their academic pursuits. All senior student athletes are eligible for this award, regardless of the sport. To be eligible, you must be attending a post secondary institute and be involved in some sport at that institution or in the community. To apply, go online to www.bigsunathletics.com. The deadline to apply is June 21st.

The Christian Connector

The Christian Connector provides a FREE Christian college information service as well as a $2,500 Christian college scholarship drawing. Students can simply log onto www.ChristianConnector.com to request information and automatically be entered in the $2,500.00 scholarship drawing! Visit them online today!!

Dollars and $ense Investment Education & Scholarship Program

The Association of 100 Black Men of Metropolitan Baton Rouge is announcing their 2013 Dollars and $ense Investment Education & Scholarship Program. This program allows African-American high school seniors with a minimum 2.5 GPA to participate in a comprehensive financial literacy curriculum that will give them expert advice on college planning and financing strategies. It will teach you how to budget, save and grow money faster through investing in stocks, bonds and mutual funds. The program is open to all eligible applicants, but those having an interest in how money works and /or entrepreneurship may really benefit. Emory Pre-College Program

Emory University, located in Atlanta, Georgia, offers a pre-college program in the summer for students who will be junior or seniors in the fall.  There are 2-six week schedules that will allow college credit and 3-two week schedules for non-credit courses.  Apply online at www.precollege.emory.edu. 


FAFSA

Announcement Date(s):  February 4, March 4, and April 9

 

Seniors:  Don’t forget to complete the FAFSA to apply for financial aid.  This will automatically enroll you for TOPS if you are eligible.  The website for FAFSA is www.fafsa.ed.gov.  The deadline is June 30th!

Free SAT/ACT Webinars
Announcement Date(s):  April 30

Webmail.tangischools.org will be offering a free SAT and ACT webinar on Tuesday, May 7th from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Students who participate in this 30-minute live online SAT/ACT class will learn important strategies that can be used on the test. Register today at webmail.tangischools.org.

Full Sail University

If you are driven by your creativity and passion for art, music, film games, or the entertainment business as a whole, you may want to consider Full Sail University for your education and career paths. Grambling State University Summer High Ability Program
Announcement Date(s): March 14 & April 11

The High Ability Program at Grambling State University is an enrichment program for high school juniors who have exemplified outstanding academic standards. Participants can earn up to six college credit hours and complete a science project. Visit their website to apply. The deadline is April 30th.
 
Grief Counseling Support Group
Announcement Date: September 20

The Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home offers a grief support group meeting every 4th Thursday evening at 6 pm. These meetings are conducted by a Grief Counselor and are free of charge and open to all grieving members of our community. The meetings take place at their Hammond location which is 12012 Highway 190 West.

LASFAA Scholarships
Announcement Date(s): April 4 & 22

The Louisiana Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, better known as LASFAA, will award at least 4-$500 scholarships to Louisiana students who are planning to attend institutions in the State! You must complete the online application at www.lasfaa.org/docs/toc_students.html and be enrolled full-time in a program that leads to a college degree or certificate. The College/University must be a member of LASFAA. All eligible recipients will be chosen by random selection. Only one entry per person is allowed. The deadline to submit your application is Tuesday, April 30th, so apply today!

Lela Scholarship Opportunities

Lela is Louisiana’s non-profit resource for college and they give out $1000 quarterly scholarships, as well as others. All Lela Scholarship opportunities are posted on their website, www.askLela.org. Seniors, you need to sign up today!
 
Le Sanctuary Book Club Scholarship
Announcement Date(s): April 15

Le Sanctuary Book Club is a non-profit organization dedicated to reading the page-turning works of diverse writers and literary giants, as well as serving the community through various activities and events. They are currently accepting applications for their scholarship that the club is offering in our area. Applications and eligibility requirements are located in the file drawer in the counselors’ office. The deadline to apply is June 1st.  
Louisiana Lions Camp Junior Counselor Employment
Announced: January 23, February 19 & March 18

The Louisiana Lions Camp is currently recruiting high school students, ages 16 and above to fill summer staff positions. There are Junior Counselor positions available for 16 and 17 year-old students. Students age 18 and above may apply for Senior Counselor and Activity Instructor positions, and those with current certifications may apply for Lifeguard positions. For more information and applications, interested students may complete the request from the website at www.lionscamp.org. See the flyer outside the counselors’ office for more info. The camp runs seven weeks starting the second week of June. Graduating seniors may also apply for one of ten $500 and one of four $1000 scholarships which are awarded at the end of the season.
LSU – S.T.R.I.P.E.S.

Attention seniors: If you are planning on attending LSU in the fall, you will want to consider attending S.T.R.I.P.E.S.! Ponchatoula Lions Club Scholarship

The Ponchatoula Lions Club Scholarship applications are in the counselors’ office. To be eligible, seniors must have at least a 2.3 GPA and be enrolling at Southeastern Louisiana University as a full time student. For applications and more information, see the folder in the counselors’ office. The deadline is May 15th.

SCAD Summer Programs

The Savannah College of Art & Design is hosting 4 summer seminars for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. The locations will be in Atlanta and/or Savannah Georgia. Seton Hall University Open House

Seton Hall University, located in South Orange, New Jersey, is hosting two open house events. The dates are Sunday, February 17th and Sunday, April 28th. This will allow you to learn about the college admissions process, discover the 80 plus outstanding majors and programs available at Seton Hall. You will also get the chance to meet current students, faculty, & admission professionals, as well as tour the campus. StudentScholarships.org focuses on providing scholarship information to students from Louisiana. You will be able to find a list of available scholarships on their website at www.studentscholarships.org/scholarship.php. The deadlines vary depending on the individual scholarships listed, so you will want to pay attention to the date.
Summer Employment with the Girl Scouts
Announcement Date(s): March 12

Attention seniors and teachers: the Girl Scouts Louisiana East, Inc. is looking for students and teachers for summer employment. You must be 18 prior to June 1st. Several positions are open, such as camp counselors, lifeguards, canoe instructors, archery instructors. Training, as well as room and board, is provided. The dates of employment are May 22 – July 20. Survivors of Suicide Support Group

A Non-Denominational free support group for those who have lost a loved one by suicide will meet the 1st and 3rd Mondays at 6 pm at the Saint Albert Student Center. Anyone is welcome to attend.
Sweet Briar College for Women

Sweet Briar College, located in Virginia, is currently accepting applications for admission. Sweet Briar is women’s college offering an excellent equestrian riding program, as well as 6 competitive sports, Field Hockey, Lacrosse, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, & Tennis. University of Kansas

University of Richmond

The University of Richmond, located in Virginia, has several programs directed towards students with a strong commitment in math and science fields. Information is available in the counselors’ office in the file drawer. Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, if you think you may be interested in attending the University of Richmond, please let your counselor know.. 
 
Washington University in St. Louis Summer Scholars Program
Announced: January 22

Washington University in St. Louis is currently accepting applications for their High School Summer Scholars Program. You can explore your interests and experience life on campus with one of their institutes; Pre-Med, Writing, Pre-Engineering, or Business. This Program allows you to get a head start on the full college experience as you are taking two college courses while living on campus for 5 weeks. Wofford College

Wofford College, located in Spartanburg, South Carolina, is looking for qualified candidates for the Wofford Scholars Program. They want PHS to nominate current juniors to be considered. If you rank in the top 10% of the junior class, made a 28 on the ACT, and are interested in the possibility of attending college at Wofford, please stop by and ask your counselor to add you as a possible candidate.

Xavier’s Contingent Admit Program to Pharmacy School
Announcement Date(s): January 18, February 19 & March 19

Exceptional high school seniors considering a career in pharmacy now have a unique opportunity to get a leg up on their professional education through a new program being offered by Xavier University. Under Xavier’s new Contingent Admit Program students can apply for admission into the College of Pharmacy as high school seniors! Those who qualify and are accepted into the program will be guaranteed a seat in the professional pharmacy program if they satisfactorily complete all of the pre-requisite courses in two years. Xavier is the only college in the state and one of a handful nationwide that offers this option. To be considered for contingent admission, high school students must have a minimum composite ACT score of 23 and a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 3.3 in a college preparatory curriculum.
