On Tuesday, May 12th, Bryanne Mader's Social Justice class at Hammond Junior High Magnet School had the privilege of meeting and listening to a Holocaust survivor. Anne Levy (standing in the center of the photo) shared her experience as a child living in Nazi occupied Poland. Anne was accompanied by Plater Robinson (standing on the right side of photo), Education Director at the Tulane University's Southern Institute of Education and Research. After Anne Levy shared her story, the students were able to walk Ms. Levy and Plater Robinson through the school to show their projects and exhibits that have been completed throughout the year.

Tucker Elementary had Book Fair recently and the students donated money to buy new books for the library. The children were able to put their money in the scuba diver box or the octopus box, to vote for Librarian Krystle Hyman to dress up one of those ways. Here's the winner!!!
Cooper Coldwell from Ponchatoula Junior High School Cooper earned 4th place in the You Be The Chemist State Challenge at LSU on April 25. Also, competing from TPSS at LSU were Lauren DeVaney (SLU Lab School), Kent Bardwell (SLU Lab School), and Taylor McLain (Loranger Middle School). Leighton Dempster of Loranger High
School signed a rifle scholarship with the University of
Memphis on April 15, 2015. In addition to
her athletic scholarship Dempster has also received the Dean’s scholarship as
well as the Honor’s scholarship from the University of Memphis. Dempster holds
a 3.9 GPA and is Loranger High School’s Student of the Year.
Dempster is the Junior Olympic
State Champion for air rifle and small bore rife and will traveling this week
to Colorado Springs to compete at the Junior Olympic National Championships at
the Olympic Training Center. Dempster began her shooting career through 4-H
Shooting Sports Program. She is a member of the Tangi Top Shots shooting
sports team and also serves as a Louisiana State 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassador.
She has been a competitive shooter for 6 years and has received many awards at
the district, state, and national level.

One branch managers, Peggy Garon and Suzanne Vidrine gave a presentation on
saving money to Mrs. Kaci Puglia's first grade class at Hammond Westside Montessori School on Wednesday, May 20.
Students learned the importance of using a bank to save money for future
spending as well as making donations to worthy causes. At the end of the
presentation, each student made a bank to take home and start saving.
The PTA at Roseland Montessori recently
completed a project to raise money to install swings at the school. The
PTA arranged several fundraising activities for the students over a span of
several years to collect enough to purchase the swings. The next project
the students requested is an installation of a fitness course around the school
track. REMS is very thankful for the continued support of such a great

Hammond Junior High Magnet School participated in Louisiana USGBC's Green School Challenge in its 2nd year. Last Year the school won 2nd place in the state. This year, Hammond Jr. WON FIRST PLACE. Amite Elementary Magnet Students in grades 3 and 4 who scored Basic and Above on both Reading and Math Benchmark scores were treated to a school crawfish boil and waterslide. What a wonderful way to celebrate their achievements. Congratulations, Warriors!
The seventh Grade English Language Arts students and teachers at Ponchatoula Jr. High School recently finished reading the novel The Giver by Lois Lowry. As a culminating activity, all seventh grade students attended a presentation entitled “Genetic Engineering—How Close are we to the Science in The Giver. The guest speaker for this event was Professor Jerrie Hanible a 15 year faculty member of Southeastern Louisiana University. Ms. Hanible teaches Biology, Anatomy, & Physiology. She was recently nationally featured as one 40 Astounding Professors under the age of 40. Above, Ms. Hanible is pictured with the seventh grade ELA teachers at PJHS.

Mrs. Crystal Addison's 4th student's at Hammond Eastide Magnet requested that she dress up like a chicken if over 80% of them beat their score on their end of the year benchmark test. She proudly complied and rewarded them by crowing for their success!

Champ Cooper teachers are ready for Red Nose Day this week. Red Nose Day is a campaign dedicated to raising money for children and young people living in poverty, by simply having fun and making people laugh. Amite Elementary Magnet School created their own music video with a parody of "Sugar" by Maroon 5. Six girls in 3rd and 4th grade worked with teachers Lisa Gros, Tyra Cook, and Tasha Dunn to rewrite "Sugar" into a new song, "Summer". These girls gave up their recess time, art time, and PE time to practice and record for this fabulous video all about summer.
