Electronic Chalkboard - Make sure that you read everything each morning to find out procedures, assignments and announcements for the day.
Icebreaker: Getting to Know You Fractions Let's get to know each other with Fractions. Use the direction sheet to complete your "About Me Circle" using markers or crayons. The teacher will start the music and you will roam the classroom exchanging circles with your classmates. When the music stops, return to your seat with the circle you have at that time. When it is your turn you will introduce that person to the class.

Problem of the Day Today we will work together to explore the app Educreations. We will use this app to complete our daily Problem of the Day. You will first create an account and become familiar with the community of Educreations. Next, we will create a lesson to explain how to solve the problem of the day. Using the iPad, we will paste a link to your lesson in the discussion board of Blackboard.
solve/explain:
Greg and Steve bought a large pizza to share.
Greg ate 5/8 of the pizza.
What fraction of the pizza was left for Steve?
Mathematical Practices1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
4. Model with mathematics.
"Math"gizers - From time to time we need to take a break. Our brain is full and we need to get the blood flowing to our brain again so we can think. "Math"gizers are just like Energizers except we put a math twist to it. Get ready to stretch!

E-Mail Assignment - Each day you need to check your Tangischools e-mail account for information and to complete the Problem of the Day. Reply to us at ttmath@tangischools.org.
Digit Place -Students will learn the concept that each digit has its own unique place within the whole number. We will play this every day. The more you play the better you get.
Innovative Classroom Is the website where the directions for Digit Place were found. You will find some amazing things there. Take the time to check it out.

Estimation Station - Every morning you will have an estimation activity. At the end of the day 2 people will be responsible for counting the items and telling the class the results. Estimating Jars (PDF)
Today's estimation is "A Burst of Fractions". Write your estimation of the number of Starbursts on the back of a sticky note, put your name on the front and then stick it on the poster. We will use the Selector Tool to select two people to count the starburst and give us the results. Those two people will also tell us the fraction of each color of Starburst.

2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
PowerHour with SMART - Calendar, Math Tools, and Widgets, oh my! Let's power up with some amazing tools offered through SMART! SMART Calendar - The best way to teach the calendar to students is to give them their own calendar. Age appropriate students can mark special events on their calendar while younger students can circle, draw, and color in parts of the calendar. Here you will find things to do with your classroom calendar.

About Today's Date This website contains fascinating facts about each day of the year from a mathematics perspective. It can be used to enhance your class's daily calendar work.
Blank Everyday Calendar (Notebook) Let's use the Smart Board to complete some calendar activities. Remember to rename it before beginning to use it that way you'll have your blank Notebook file from year to year.
Mental Math Mode - We will start the day with a mental math problem. You'll need to think hard and the only tool you can use is your brain.

You will need to print two slides. One slide has the full illustration and the other is half of the same illustration. Type the title of your story on the front cover before printing. After you print them, cut across the middle of the half illustration. This will be your front cover. The full illustration is your back cover. Staple the front cover and the story pages to the back cover. You are ready to write your story or poem.
SMARTBoard Activity - The SMART Board re-energizes students as well as teachers. You will get lots of ideas on how to use this valuable tool in your classroom to teach math. Here are some Notebook files that you can use when you focus on Fractions.
Integration of Knowledge and Ideas
7. Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse media and formats, including visually and quantitatively, as
well as in words.
Software - Kidspiration 3 The new Kidspiration 3 helps to develop literacy and numeracy skills. Each day we will use this program to develop a specific skill. I think you'll find it is more than just for writing. It it builds conceptual understanding in Math.
Numbered Heads Together - The Numbered Heads Together software turns any set of questions into a fun, interactive learning game for the entire class. Click here to order the software.
Make it, Take it - As students explore the concept of fractions, it is important for them to be able to handle concrete materials so they can compare and identify fractional parts.
