WWWords to Live By

Kids are like computers.  The knowledge base can be accessed if teachers press the right keys.  Teachers must "SHIFT CONTROL", making the students responsible for the end products.

ALL technology problems in TPSS should be reported through the online HelpDesk. You can find a link to the HelpDesk on the Tangischools homepage.  The link to the HelpDesk DOES NOT WORK outside of our network... in other words, don't try to report an incident from home. Find a working computer somewhere at your school or office to report your problems. For step-by-step directions on using HelpDesk click here. Our Computer Technicians are directed by Technology Director, Jake Ragusa, to work from HelpDesk incidents, so PLEASE don't try to kidnap them to fix your computer as they walk down the halls of your school :) If you put your problems into the HelpDesk, sometimes they can be fixed remotely, and if not the Technician will be there shortly to take care of your problems. Periodically you need to check on the status of your incidents and edit the incidents to add additional information if needed instead of creating new one.

Time to Change Passwords

After Labor Day, when you login to your computer for the first time, you will see a pop-up box forcing you to change your password. Please choose something that you can remember and keep it secure and private. This new password will also be your password to login to email. Your password should be at least four characters in length and can be any combination of letters, numbers, characters or punctuation marks. You can anticipate having to change your password twice a year as long as you are a TPSS employee... once in the Fall semester and again in the Spring Semester. No one in the Technology office will be able to retrieve your new password... all we will be able to do is allow you to reset it.

Master Calendar & Staff Development Portal

This summer we began piloting the brand new Staff Development Portal developed by Network Administrator, Mike Diaz, in which teachers will be able to register for classes, keep track of CLUs, and see a list of all TPSS based Staff Development that they have participated in. Directions for using the Staff Development Portal can be found here. From now on, all registration and confirmation of workshops, classes and in-services will be done through the Portal, so make sure you check it out. The Master Calendar has all meetings and classes that are scheduled in our school district... there are even links to allow you to register for classes right inside the Master Calendar descriptions.

Nighttime Internet Access in TPSS
The Tangipahoa Parish School System network is "asleep" from 6:00 p.m. at night to 5:00 a.m. each morning ....which means that Internet access in the schools between that time is not available unless you notify the Technology Department ahead of time. If your school is planning a Technology Night, Open House, or other meetings in which you need Internet access, please let us know before hand, so that we can make arrangements for you to be able to connect.

TPSS Computers & E-mail

A few things you need to remember about TPSS computers:

1. You should shut down and restart your computer every morning when you get to school... this will give your computer a good start for the day.

2. If someone else's name is in your login box (like a technician's name who has been working on your computer) just delete it and put your information in.

3. Your username and your email address are TWO different things... your username is usually your first initial and last name (all lowercase letters with no spaces). For instance Jane Doe would have a username of jdoe. But your email address is your first name dot your last name @ tangischools.org.... so Jane Doe's email address would be jane.doe@tangischools.org.

4. If you have problems logging into your email try these things:
   a. username first initial last name and password last four digits of your social, if that doesn't work...
   b. username first initial middle initial last name and last four digits of your social, if that doesn't work...
   c. username first initial lowercase 'n' last name and last four digits of your social, if that doesn't work...
   d. contact Carol Edwards at 748-2469 for help

5. Student usernames and passwords will be distributed to principals and HOTT Team members after Labor Day. Students should login to computers with their individual username and password to be able to have access to their "My Documents" folder from any computer on the TPSS network.

6. Don't ever tell your computer to remember your password... but if you have here's how to clear that.
   a.
In Internet Explorer, click "Tools" >"Options" > "Content"
   b. Under "Personal Information" click the “Auto Complete” button and then click the “Clear Passwords” button

7. Don't ever allow students to use a computer that is logged in with your username and password... always log off before the student begins use.

8. Don't ever give out your personal information in response to an email. If you get an email asking you to verify your username, password, social security number, bank account number, or credit card number, it is more than likely "phishing" ... (fish´ing) (n.) The act of sending an e-mail to a user falsely claiming to be an established legitimate enterprise in an attempt to scam the user into surrendering private information that will be used for identity theft. The e-mail directs the user to visit a Web site where they are asked to update personal information, such as passwords and credit card, social security, and bank account numbers, that the legitimate organization already has. The Web site, however, is bogus and set up only to steal the user’s information.

9. When you login to JPAMS, if the program asks if you would like to update the software, please say "YES" and don't stop the installation.

Public Folders in Tangischools E-mail

In your Tangischools E-mail program you will find shortcut buttons on the bottom left of your navigation bar. The Public Folders are there for all employees to view. People within the school district that have jobs that affect a large group of employees have public folders where they store copies of E-mail messages that they would like to share with everyone. If there is a + sign in front of a person's name, click it to open folders underneath. Each folder may have many E-mail messages or files that might help make your work easier.

Wild Wonderful Web Sites

This week I want to call your attention to some websites from right here at home that you might not know about....
Tangischools Resources Page - This page has links to all kinds of resources for teachers and students, such as WorldBook Online, Gale Group Reseach Databases, SkillsTutor, UnitedStreaming Videos, Gaggle Filtered E-mail, MarcoPolo Internet Content for Classrooms and much, much more.
Tangischools Comprehensive Curriculum Page - This page has links and information for implementing the Louisiana Comprehensive Curriculum.
Tangischools Tech Tips Page - This page will give you step-by-step directions with pictures to do lots of the things that may be causing you problems.
Back to School and Open House - This page has links to help you get your school year started out right.

As of June 1, 2006, all Tech Points are being kept within the Staff Development Portal. No longer will you have to search for those valuable Tech Point certificates that are at the bottom of that stack of papers "to be filed." When you attend classes that qualify for Tech Points, they will be awarded along with your CLUs automatically in the Portal. At any time, you can click the "Tech Points" link in the left hand Navigation Pane and see how many points you have and order online at anytime. This automated system will send a list to Carol Edwards once a month to order materials and equipment. You will be notified by email when your Tech Point order has been filled and is ready for delivery. The Portal will also keep a current total of points you have remaining. Remember, all Tech Points accumulated in a year have to be "spent" by May 31, 2007. Thanks to Network Administrator, Mike Diaz, for developing this efficient way of taking care of Tech Points :)
